I'm trying to figure out in the 3rd shot, what's going on, and how dangerous it all might be...

Its usually the last manuever of the show - the bomb burst or fan. Becuase the photo was taken with a long lens (300mm) it's compressed the depth of the photo and made them look all alot closer to each other than they really are.

I know the manouevre - still worried...
Numbering from nearest to furthest away:

what did #5 do immediately after?
And did this all look like a planned execise?? laugh.gif
EDIT: OR, is #5 actually in front? in which case, don't mind me...

number 5 is in the front and should be pulling up to go vertical.

from the way you have numbered them, looking downwards at the aircraft, before the manouver, they should look like this...

-4---------3---------5---------2---------1
-|-----------|----------|----------|----------|
\/----------\/---------\/---------\/---------\/
+----------------------------------------+
------------+-------------------+-------
-----------------------+------------------

(the plusses are aircraft and the numbers have arrows pointing to each one)(they are traveling down the page)

4 will do a left knife-edge
3 will turn left and upwards at a 45 degree angle
5 will go straight up
2 will turn right and upwards at a 45 degree angle
1 will do a right knife-edge

causing them all to cross over each other

(i understand that from my image, 4 and 1, 3 and 2 will collide but they are jarred more than this to prevent this)

i hope that explains your queries!

great pics btw
