Here are a few shots taken today of the magnificent Catalina.
For the other people who enjoy taking photos, they were taken with my new EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM.

have read reveiws, some good, and some bad but that is the nature of reviews but so far I quite like it and main reason for its purchase was to have a lens that is small and compact and this one seems to go quite well. 8-)
Will follow with some more photos later.

Cheers

Speak of the devil, I just clicked on this topic when it flew around my house!

Here are a couple of air to airs as well.
Used a different lens as the aircraft is big so you dont need 70mm.

Awesome stuff Mr C! I was on the phone with a former workmate of mine who was in this lovely machine earlier today! Looks like it would've been fantastic on this beautiful day!

Nice to see some air to airs of the Cat again! And BTW, I'd like to get myself one of those cameras, judging by your results! ;)

I got the young guy you speak of a seat in it.
By the way the Cat is winging its way South as I type this so if you live in Christchurch keep a look out over the next few days.

Here are three more.
The bottom two are with the new lens but the air 2 air isnt.
I took the new one but as I say less than 70 was fine a lot of the time so will have to have a play with a smaller aircraft and am really happy with the new purchase and I would recommend it thats for sure.

Beautiful second shot is pure PBY - reminds me of that movie of the guys fishing on the lake...
you know the one, the Cat appears on finals behind them..

I use a pair of Canon 40D bodies.
See more here: http://capphotography.fotopic.net/c1335050.html

There is better gear out there but air 2 air photography is a lot harder than I thought it would be so technique, patience, putting aircraft in the right part of the sky, using good pilots, and having a steady arm and knowing your gear well is the key to good results.
Forgot the most important thing, Trust in one another.

Also no canopy helps image quality and if you see below you will understand what I mean, pretty impressive sight though. Took these two weeks ago :plane:

"Always"! Superb moviefilm! Watched it for the tenth time on Friday last with my sometimes-GF! Ah, I must get a copy!

And Gav, from the sound of him he was quite grateful for it :) . Superb Changa shots too....not often we viewers get to see the back of Mr McIntyre's head! Nice to see China Doll out and about again, too!

The 4th and 5th pictures you posted are just spectacular, the Catalina stands out so much, both from the ground and in the sky- I was hoping to see PBY at Tauranga airshow but there was only a static dilapidated hulk on display :(

Thanks once again for sharing your awesome work with us Gavin!

It is my pleasure to post photos hereas they seem to be appreciated.

There is heaps to come and last week alone I flew alongside 8 aircraft and there are a few to come this year with 2 or 3 very special flights planned for this year but I wont say much more just yet in case things done work out but I have a flight coming up in the next month or so that could produce some great shots and you guys will be amongst the first to see them should it all work out.
