I flew from Tauranga to Wellington for a "mini break" recently. Booked it through Grab a Seat so the price wasn't too bad, and the hotel we stayed at gave us a pretty good deal too ( a bit over $300 for 2 nights stay). Flew on Air Nelson's Q300s both ways.

Going to Wellington, our aircraft was ZK-NEG.

I asked the flightie if the jumpseat was available on my first flight (which was NZ8571). She said she'd ask the captain but that they didn't usually let people in the jumpseat anymore, and it was even less likely as there was some kind of line training going on on our flight. She came back and confirmed that the answer was no sad.gif. But that wasn't too much of a problem, as it was my first in a Q300 for ages anyway, so I was happy to sit down the back smile.gif

Landing at Wellington was fairly uneventful, as there wasn't a lot of wind at all.
I'm not sure whether I preferred this calm landing or the bumpier one I had when I last flew to WLG in a Saab unsure.gif Both were good biggrin.gif.

On the ground at WLG.

Visited Te Papa and all the other main attractions in Wellington, which was all good thumbup1.gif. Lots of yukky smokers in Welly though dry.gif

Then on the way back up, we nearly missed our flight as the shuttle wasted time waiting for other airport bound passengers who didn't show. There were also lots of roadworks and lane closures in the city.
We made it to the airport in the end, at which point we realised we had left the camera (containing all our photos) on the shuttle. I sprinted back to the shuttle, who was now down in arrivals about to leave - I don't think I've run so fast in my life laugh.gif. This was followed by more running to gate 4 to meet our aircraft. We were the last to board, and this was after the final boarding call too. ZK-NEB was to be our ride back to TRG.

Once again, I asked if the jumpseat was available. I was told the same thing about jumpseating not normally being allowed now, but Sarah (our FA) said she would ask anyway.
A few minutes later she came back, and from the look on her face I was sure the answer would be no. Pleasant surprise though, she told me the pilots had "said it was ok and would I please come this way?". Yay! biggrin.gif

Unfortunately, not the best photo.

There was 32 POB and it was a pretty hot day for Wellington, NEG struggled to climb her way out of Wellington.
We used pretty much maximum climb power, and we were still slower than normal. Engine temperatures were a bit peaky as well apparently.
The warmer weather was better for jumpseating though, as Captain Peter said that there had been a huge cell stretching from Hamilton over to Tauranga, obscuring the view of the country below.
Once we had reached our cruise altitude of 19000 feet, the temperature hovered around zero degrees - hotter than normal.

Home is somewhere over there (that's Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island in the middle)

Heather, the first officer, was the pilot flying for our leg. Aside from taxi, she did most of the work while Peter handled radio calls etc, before engaging the autopilot shortly out of Wellington.
Radio was pretty much silent for us, but we listened to ATC lecturing someone doing lessons make a few blunders laugh.gif. "Er, ABC, what are you doing? Would you mind getting on Parra, because your current heading is going to take you to somewhere you don't wanna go" or something along those lines. This was followed by "that's Ohakea - you can't land there". The student was someone known to the pilots.

As it was not busy, there was lots of conversation between us - stuff about school, flying, careers, camps, the news, a fire below us, etc - just general chit chat.
They mentioned some crew room gossip about someone from around Rotorua who waits for Grab a Seats to Wellington to come up purely so they can ride in the jumpseat... I wonder who on earth that might be??? radar.gif It's not me BTW.

Tauranga and the Mount. You can see the reflection of some paperwork.

We landed at Tauranga a bit farther along the runway than Heather would have preferred, but the anchors were slammed on and we made the turn to the terminal no worries.

Thanks Sarah and many thanks to Peter and Heather for letting me ride the jumpseat, as this was the first time I've jumpseated in the Q300. thumbup1.gif

Congrats on getting a jump seat ride, and it's so nice to see pilots willing to share such a thing still to the enthusiasts out there smile.gif

Great story.....lucky you! What did you tell your parents when you started walking up to the pointy end? Or did you ask when you were seated?

Nice pics! Interesting to see that the Q300 cockpits are exactly the same as VAC which is 20 years older (Bar the two EFIS screens each side).

Where abouts did you stay in Welly Anthony?

Nice shots as well, cheers for posting them up, trips like that are always good fun.

Alex

Don't look at me, if I got on a jumpseat (even once) I would post photos...

Isn't it evident?? Boeing are my favourite aircraft.

P.S. that's is my real birthday but I wish to keep my real age secret to keep you all pondering.

I'd definately recommend everyone travelling on the Dash or ATR just "ask", or write a letter prior to travelling, saying who you are, what you are interested in, and why you want to sit up front. If you are older like me, hand them your drivers licence with the note - it's good to put a face to the person down back asking.
But, don't even bother with the jets unless it's prior organised via the operations staff. It's just not possible on the day as far as I am aware smile.gif

Thanks guys.

Yip, I just asked. I made sure we were the last to board and as we were handing the flight attendant our boarding passes, I quietly asked if she could ask the captain if the jumpseat was available. I just tried to be polite to the flight attendant when I asked, and then I was polite to the crew - saying thank you, asking if it was ok to use the camera, that short of thing.
Mum was all good with it as I told her that I was going to ask for the jumpseat on our flights and asked if she was ok with that - although I'm not sure what some of the other passengers thought! laugh.gif When I was standing in the cockpit doorway once we had landed in TRG I could see the "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" look on some of the passenger's faces (I got a few smiles too though).
I was going to organise it in advance by calling Air Nelson, but the person who organises it was away until the 12th. Turned out advanced organisation wasn't necessary anyway.

We stayed at the Novotel in Wellington, which has one side on The Terrace and one side on Lambton Quay which is handy for shopping and getting to restaurants and Te Papa and stuff. The rooms aren't really, really flash but they're quite nice - all the mod cons like air conditioning, LCD TV, internet, etc. There is a buffet breakfast restaurant at the Novotel called Caucus which was pretty good. They also do lunch, dinner and bar services. Room service was speedy. thumbup1.gif Last time we stayed at the CityLife Apartments which were about twice the price, but quite a bit nicer.

If you're flying the 737, as Alister said, it's best to organise it in advance. Talk to or email a lady called Clairlene Muller-Fraser from Domestic Crew Admin, who should be able to help you. If you're going to fly the Q300 or you can get a Grab a Seat, then definitely ask - the worst they'll say is no, and if they say yes then it's pretty awesome biggrin.gif

I'm still working on the video, which I will put on YouTube and post a link up.

I wish I could get jumpseat on my next domestic flight, unfortunately, its on a b1900, and they don't even have cockpit doors!

Awesome Dude,

I had the same experience as you in the Q300
Same route TG-WN Jumpseat
WN-TG Jumpseat
Saying that your lucky you were aloud after that incident with that lady stabing those pilots last year.
I think it's great pilots are willing to share as well, Go Air Nelson!!
When I asked I just told the FA about my flight training and showed her my Medical so she knew I wasn't a Jack ass and then she went and showed the pilots before giving me the all clear. They let me hop in there soon as we where airbourne and let me stay till shutdown however on both ways they never let me sit in there for takeoff??
I would think Landing would be more stressful?

Wbu Antony

I will definetley ask if i go on a Jet and if you show them a Medical or something they know your not a crazy passenger

I'm not a pilot and have no licence nor even a medical, however, I do have a few items that could be used as proof that I'm a contriubtor to the industry. I'm just picturing lining up to board and pulling a folder out of my carry-on bag containing photographs I've had published and articles I've written that have been printed in magazines! Then, I'm trying to imagine someone like Gavin opening up this massive portfolio of printed photos that comes unfolded and falls down the stairs and onto the tarmac!

Kinda like CVs to get a jumpseat ride, I'm just cracking up at how far it could go.
