SOUTH ISLAND TOUR 2008

Hi everyone,

I have embarked on my first 'tour' in FS9. I am doing a South Island tour, beginning and ending in Nelson. The aircraft that i will be flying will be a Cessna 208 Caravan. I will be flying in real time and with real weather.

Keep up to date here!

LEG ONE: NZNS - NZKM

I began my South Island Tour at 6.00pm in Nelson. I went through the pre-flight checks and prepared for takeoff. I checked the forecast and it said scattered cloud, visability 40 miles. I taxied to the runway and hit full throttle. I climbed out of NZNS in the warm evening sun and banked left and headed for the Abel Tasman National Park. I passed by reasonably quickly and caught some glimpses of Awaroa, Kaiteriteri etc. I cruised across Golden Bay and then banked to the south, following the Heaphy Track.

I started to descend towards NZKM, with a beautiful sunset out to my right.

I touched down at NZKM with the sun just dissapearing. I switched of the Caravan and got it set for the next morning! Hopefully the weather will be just as good!!

LEG TWO: NZKM - NZHK

I awoke to a chilly morning in Karamea. I headed straight out to my Caravan and got her set for the second leg. The weather was good for flying - scattered low cloud. I revved the Cessna up and taxied to the runway.....full throttle and we were off to Hokitika.

On final at Hokitika

Switched her off and again, got her set for the next day.

LEG THREE: NZHK - OKARITO AIRSTRIP

I departed Hoki quite late, as the sun was setting. It was a race against time because it was getting dark and the Okarito airstrip has no lights. I took off and flew south to Okarito at full steam.

Race against time! HURRY!!!!

On final (cannot actually see airstrip)

Parked up at Okarito ready for fourth leg to Haast tomorrow.

Nice one ScottyB - but your pictures for leg 2 don't seem to be coming through. Nice shots anyway.

LEG 4: OKARITO - HAAST

Yet again i rose to a stunning day on the West Coast. I down to the airstrip where my Caravan was waiting. I started her up and we departed Okarito. My destination was Haast, where i am staying with a friend. I passed by the glaciers and Mt Cook, where i took a few photos. This the most stunning leg in the tour so far, as i flew in one of the most scenic areas of the country.

Approaching Haast

My girl, all set for tomorrows leg

Can you crank the anti liasing up a bit to get rid of the jaggies? -- or does that affect your FPS too much?

Me also! :D

Awesome shots, I like how you're going to airports people don't normally bother with.

Hi guys,

I havn't been able to do my leg from Haast to Milford Sound because of poor weather conditions. Im going to head down to the airport to check things out and most probably i will fly today, regardless of conditions.

Thanks.

LEG 5: HAAST - NZMF

I awoke to poor weather conditions in Haast this morning and was unable to depart until 3.00pm. The cloud broke up and i was off on leg 5 of my tour. I climbed out of Haast quickly and thought about which way i should approach NZMF from. I could either head up the Hollyford Valley and go over the Homer Pass, or take the coastal option and enter the sound from the Tasman Sea. I chose the coastal route as strong southerly winds were whipping down the valley. I touched down at Milford sound after a beautiful flight.

There's no better way to spend a school holidays with bad weather than flying tours in FS!

Me and the ole' default Caravan spent many an hour cruising around the virtual unknown while I was on leave from high school- great to see you doing the same
