Leg 41: Lord Howe Island YLHI to Norfolk Island YSNF

Route: YLHI NF YSNF, 484nm, 3.3 hours (Total: 18,606nm, 117.4 hours)
From one tiny rock hundreds of miles from anywhere to another tiny rock, hundreds of miles from anywhere!

With only a small apron, we had to tie down the plane on the grass. No matter though, we can still do a thorough preflight of both the plane and our emergency equipment and supplies. Once loaded, the plane is at max weight and we can only partially fill the tip tanks. Oh, and this scenery has very strange cartoon-like trees!

past the mysterious mountain!

Leaving behind our small, fragile, refuge, and looking forward to several hours of nothing but water and some old comedy shows on the ipod.

user posted image
Cruising at 9,500ft. A solid undercast stops us from even looking out for passing ships. It's almost two hours before we pick up the NF VOR and can start tracking it.

user posted image
Eventually we're lined up on base for runway 11. Gear down... three greens... Oh. Bu66er!

user posted image
Cycle the gear again.... Nope. Even the hand crank does nothing. I'd like to declare an emergency, but who to? Norfolk Island is only traffic, and there's no one else on frequency. There's nowhere else in range, and no passing heavies. Guess we're on our own...

user posted image
Short final. Okay, now here's the plan...

user posted image
Touch down on the mains, then keep the stick right back, allowing the plane to slow. By the time the nose drops, it'll be going slowly enough and hopefully won't do too much damage. Some people say you should switch off the engine. But why create a second emergency? The prop's a write off regardless and the engine will still need a strip down.

user posted image
I'm not going to show you the sad result (apart from anything, FS's idea of a nosewheel up landing is to bury the plane nose first in the tarmac to a depth of several feet!). Instead here is some music, and a pleasant map of the route so far.

Leg 42: Norfolk Island YSNF to Auckland Intl NZAA

Route: YSNF NF KT AA NZAA, 593nm, 4.1 hours (Total: 19,199nm 121.5 hours)

The good news is the plane itself is pretty much undamaged; a few scratches and scrapes, but nothing structural. The engine of course didn't fare so well, and needs a complete strip down and rebuild. The insurance company have said they'd be happier with a new engine, but Lycoming are quoting six weeks for a new IO-540-e. Hartzell are able to deliver a prop somewhat more quickly. So we can either sit here and wait, or....

Cadge a ride in a passing ex-RNZAF DH104 De Havilland Devon!

user posted image
The Devon is the military version of the DH Dove, the post war replacement for the Dragon Rapide. Its role was as a communications and navigation trainer.

user posted image
This version of the plane by Derek Palmer is for FS9, but works quite happily in FSX, although there's no sound (it was defaulted to the FS9 Comet, which no longer exists!). There's only a 2D panel, which suffers from the FSX "invisible 2D panel" problem, but it does fly beautifully.

Seating for 8 at the back. You can see the distinctive perspex dome housing the direction finder loop antenna and pylon for the wire.

After three hours over water, we pass Cape Reinga. Land at last!

And so to the sprawling metropolis of Auckland.

Jon: I'm going to be in Welly for much of next month, so I might take you up on that (or something a bit stronger!)

Andrew: I spotted Ian's name in the readme, but I couldn't see him hanging off the wings anywhere... The Dove has been one of my favourite 'old' planes ever since I saw one at Duxford some years ago. Somehow, the perspex dome on top always makes me think of Enid Blyton's Noddy!

Scon: Thanks. I thought that shaking was just my landing...

Charl: I hope my RW flight (Air NZ via Hong Kong) is somewhat quicker too: 121.5 flying hours so far on this one!! :plane:

Leg 43: Auckland Intl NZAA to Wellington Intl NZWN

Route NZAA OR WU OK PP NZWN, 296nm, 2.2 hours (Total: 19495 nm 123.7 hours)

We're in a rental plane for this leg. The good news is that we've managed to source an IO-540 engine locally, but it's in Crristchurch. So we've arranged for the SF to be crated and shipped, and the new engine and prop fitted. Hopefully it sould be there waiting for us when we arrive in a few days...

Jon: Milk, no sugar, thanks. ;)

It's Robin Corn's FS9 photo Auckland and Welly. They work pretty well, and are let down only by the large gap between them! (oh, and it's a real shame the photo textures run out 2/3 of the way along Kapiti Island)

Leg 44: Wellington Intl NZWW to Christchurch Intl NZCH

Route: NZWN TR BM KI NZCH, 184nm, 1.8 hours (Total: 19,649nm, 125.5 hours)
The penultimate leg of our journey takes us across from the North Island ofNew Zealand, to the South...

After waiting seemingly forever for a 737 on final (I think we were waiting when it was still overhead Nelson!), we get cleared to take off from runway 34.

user posted image
Climbing out, we get a view of the capital city before disappearing into the clouds.

user posted image
I'd planned to wibble on about how much better Blenheim will look once Robin's high res scenery is released, but, frankly, I don't think I'd spot the difference!

user posted image
Through a gap in the clouds, I get a hint that the next batch of fluffy cumulus might come with a granite lining...

user posted image
Climbing through 9,000 feet, we can see the tops, and bits of rock poking through.

user posted image
10,000 ft up, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a farm strip!

user posted image
A great view of Kaikoura...

user posted image
The weather cleared as we approached Christchurch, and we were cleared straight in to runway 20. I was rather high on the approach when...HOLY COW!!!

user posted image
After four go arounds, each one lower and tighter than the one before, I declared a "humanitarian emergency" (if I didn't get on the ground, the tower guy would be toast. And anyhow, what idiot clears someone for take off on 02 with a plane on short final for 20 and another behind it - at Welly we were kept waiting for one plane on very very very long final)

I had to open both doors to let the steam out!

Leg 45: Christchurch Into NZCH to Oxford

Route: DCT, 20nm, 0.6 hours (Total: 19,679nm, 126.1 hours)
A pleasant few days R&R in Christchurch while waiting for the new engine to be fitted, and the front gear locking pin to be replaced. We're very close now to our final destination; in fact we've already driven there a couple of times, checking up on the arrangements. Even in the air, it's only half an hour...

user posted image
Reunited with Oscar Xray for the final short push across the Canterbury Plain.

Climbing out, with the city as our backdrop. Ironically, Christchurch was actually inspired by the very Oxford we left 126 hours ago!

user posted image

user posted image
Heading out across the plain.

user posted image
The township of Oxford nestles at the edge of the mountains

user posted image
Oxford doesn't have an airfield, but the paddock by our right wing tip is regularly used by the local farmer, and we have permission to use it...

user posted image
... And so we combine the flypast of the town with a 'circle to land' manoeuvre...

user posted image
The landind strip has a noticable incline, and the hills at the back make it pretty much one-way.

user posted image
So now it's just a quick jog back down the slope to the party!
