Unread Topics

Sometimes when I load up NZFF, it says that, for example there is an unread post in the Screenshots forum, I go in to check it, and there's not. I know I can click 'mark all posts read' but that doesn't fix it for long. It makes it hard to find where there are posts that I actually haven't read.
How can I fix this? Firefox 2.0 btw winkyy.gif

I suspect that if someone edits a post, it will show up as new. So will poll votes, even if nothing else is added.
When I first load up the forum, I click on 'View new posts', read whatever interests me, then I go back to the main page and mark all as read.

Humm, thats interesting. I think it might depend on how you visit the topics - I think the forum might be a little picky about it.

How do you view the threads? It might make a difference if instead of going straight back to the main page after looking at whatever thread in x forum, you went back to the sub-forum. So, instead of going "Screenshot Thread => Main Forum Page", perhaps go "Screenshot Thread => Screenshot forum page (with the list of the threads etc) => Main Forum Page".

Although it might not really be a lot of fun visiting an extra page - at least it will give us a bit more info on whether its the forum or some setting on your PC that is causing this, and then we can see if we can't find a solution. smile.gif

Randomly since yesterday (when the board was updated), I am suddenly seeing the little orange 'new post' marker next to loads of topics which I have already read last week!

I selected to 'mark all topics as read' option but it makes no differance. Any idea why?

Hmm, I updated the board on Friday - yesterday I fixed the video thing and updated the gallery. What times did you notice it happening yesterday? Maybe an idea would be to just log out then in again and see what happens there? smile.gif

If they are polls, a new vote will make them appear as unread (although won't bump them to the top of the list), would that be the case?

I'm getting the same thing; it's been doing it for a couple of days now...

I go down and 'mark all posts as read,' but some still appear as being 'new,' even though they're up to a few weeks old unsure.gif

The ones I'm getting as 'new' aren't polls, just normal threads.

Works for me too- although it made all the posts appear in linear format. If that happened to you, click on the options menu in the topic title to go back to standard.

That's what was happening to me. How do I do what Kelburn said? Can someone be more clear? winkyy.gif

At the bottom of the main forum page (actually between the list of forums and the 'statistics' bar at the bottom) there is a link, 'Delete all cookies set by this board' (or something like that). It'll log you out after cookies deleted, so you then have to log in. winkyy.gif

Is anyone else having this problem? Or is it only the people above; please drop a post in here or PM me if you are getting old topics that you have read showing up as if you have not read them. winkyy.gif

The weird issue for me at the moment is that for a couple of threads, when I click the 'Goto first unread post' icon next to the thread topic, it keeps going to the same post from like Sep... I think this may be the last post that was made before I was made an admin as it only seems to do it in the forums where I have admin privileges...

Which is quite annoying for threads like the post your desktop thread... as it means I am forever trying to find where I was last up to!! sad.gif

That sounds... unusual. What exactly are you clicking on? The thread name on the right-hand side of the forum page, or some other button?

HCP- Try removing the NZFF cookies, then logging out and back in. That seemed to fix it for me.

I click onto the Forum (eg. Off Topic)... and just to the left of the Thread Topics that have new messages, there is a little orange square with a white triangle in the bottom right corner (note that I am using Old-Style NZFF skin)

The link for the icon is something like:

hxxp://nzff.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2013&view=getnewpost

But I end up like 2 or 3 pages from the end... I have deleted cookies, cache, logged out, logged back in etc... and nothing seems to help...

i might try a different skin and see if that helps...

Hmmmm well I have come home and tried switching the skins... clicking on the view new post icon seemed to work OK... so I switched the skin back and I then started getting the 'every post is unread' type behaviour... so I logged out... deleted the cookies... logged back in and (touch wood) things seem to be working OK...

I guess I will have to wait and see when I use the comp at work to see if that may be screwing things up!

Update 7/11/2007: Touch wood everything seems to be working OK... must have been some cookies or something that the delete cookies link was not removing... a complete removal of all local data (using the firefox options) and the swapping to and back of skins seems to have fixed it
