OK, this question has plagued me for a while. I personally think that the swear filter is set too low. Can this be changed?
Obviously there are words that are not acceptable, (f word, s word etc), but I don't think cr@p and b*gger are offensive words. I accept that there are some young-ins on the forum, so some censorship is appropriate but in any event, you're not even trying to mask the word with an @ symbol.

Thoughts?

I don't consider swear words bad. They are just words that have had their meaning "altered" if you will. People here the f word all the time. It is in all movies M and over and people will complain if it was beeped out(except in austin powers 2 talkshow ) so why do they complain ONLY if they read them.

Of course the "extremely bad" words have to censored because of the occasional nosy 5 year old, and for people who do find swearing offensive.

Swearing for me are just meaningless words used at a time like when something hurts or is exciting etc. e.g. I would not say "ow the ball hit me right on the nose and it hurts." I'd say "shoot(edited use imagination, starts with "S") my (very very bad word) nose. WTFOMFG."

So to answer you question i think some more words like b**ger and cr@p should be allowed, but still not the very bad words(people would complain too much, especially the older members who are always like "don't say that bad word ever again young man")

because it is a religeous word. People can find words not belong to thier relgion offensive

On the admin panel of the majority of forums there is a list of unacceptable words which you can choose to edit. Most of these boards have American backgrounds and in some sttes of the USA certain words are not accetable in Public.
With Swearing I find it shows a low level of intelligence of laziness on the person using swear words. Certain wordings are used quite inncently but can be classed as offensive elsewhere in the world. Take for instance the famous Aussie Toursism commercial that is banned in the UK or the Toyota advert banned in Australia (of all places).
I get a email and if I see any swearing in it I tend to switch off to the context of that email and it goes into the Spam bin. I try to limit exposure to my kids to swearing which is hard considering there is a guy I know who says the F word in every sentance. What maybe acceptable to some is not to others and even though we speak English we are not using the correct form of it, look up in a dictionary the meaning of some of the colourful words we use then makes you wonder why we use it in another context.
Innocently using a swear word in times of crisis or shock is reasonably acceptable, as general converstaion is not or written down is just not acceptable in my book.

At school they don't like people swearing especially the f word, yet they buy dictionary that have them. at least the caption for the word aren't"is a very offensive woed in most societies"

I take a slightly different tack to this: I detest any process that belittles or cheapens things.
The English language has less than a dozen swearwords, and probably only four are suitable when you hit your thumb with a hammer.
The Toyota ad was brilliant in that it took a "no-no" word and applied it to situations where everyone would agree it was truly warranted.
What else could you possibly say when the treestump popped out over the ute and took out the window?
But in so doing, they took a word which needs an exclamation mark, and made it conversational.
Now you can say it anywhere, and read it most places, without it causing a ripple.
So what do you say now, when the treestump goes through the window? The word is so cheap it hardly has any impact.
Well you go for the next one, and the next one, until they are all used up.
Unfortunately swearwords take generations to make, so when they're gone, they're gone.
We need to treasure our swearwords, and use them only when absolutely necessary!
Good on the British Advertising standard to ban the Australian tourism ad, it was about to rob us of a very nice middle-of-the-road swearword.

My own opinion is that any participation on the internet requires more personal responsibility, rather than less. People assume that because they can 'get away with' more on the internet, they can somehow bypass normal social responsibilities, in pursuit of their rights.
I tend to look at any public forum as an online version of a public meeting place. If we all met up at the local community hall for a discussion on flightsim, I would suspect that the behaviour would be a lot better than what we are used to online, and the language would be less colourful.
I'm talking about a meeting open to all ages, rather than a specifically age-restricted get-together -- I expect a different level of behaviour and language down the pub.
The language filters serve the purpose of overcoming the very prevalent idea that if it isn't specifically stated in the rules, then anything goes. As if normal social conventions don't apply.
If you are constricted by the language filters, then this is a sign that they are doing their job, rather than something to be fixed.
On the other hand, I was annoyed that someone felt the need to bleep Southpark on the Xbox Live download service. Southpark would not be the same without the serious attacks on social conventions.
However, unlike Southpark, the forum is real-life.

Personally, nothing really offends me...but as someone that often (mostly!) accesses this board from work, any webpage that has multiple swear words will get blocked and eventually the whole site will be deemed 'offensive' (i.e. i wont be able to view the whole site at work...unless i can convince IT that it isnt offensive and that it is work related)
(PPrune is blocked at work for me....have no idea why?)
So censorship of swear words is good in this case.....
Furthermore, not allowing swearing will hopefully raise the quality of posts and avoid it turning into a verbal brawl, devoid of useful info.

hmm interesting, I see the overuse of "swear words" as a lack of inteligents, on the odd ocasion I watch tv there are some shows with people swearing in every sentence when they have the lightest bit of frustration. It reallyl shows a lack of ability and creativeness to come up with other words when "you ******* *******" isn't really nessacery..

Well I'm the youngest in this fourm (wow I see "ooOO00OOoo" is my age too, I used to be the youngest then...) and I use the words that are censored with a "@" when I feal there is a need to.. only thing that offends me at this fourm is disrespect for my age group, so "swearwords" don't effect me, no point getting up tight about it when you walk down the street and hear it constantly anyway..

But I have one complaint.. I don't like the word "crud", so I don't want my cr@ps turning into cruds or I could jsut insert the "@" manualy

Why not use the word Rubbish?

Timmo has raised a good point about work based PCs, Think it would be irresonsible of us all to use to many objectional words or we could find many of our readers blocked.

I'm gonna agree with james about the crud/cr@p thing. Has anyone had any complaints about the whole swearing thing? As a forum we don't see much unneccessary swearing, I'm not sure I see the point of changing anything. The more rules we make up, the more people are going to get teed off.

Swearing also gives a bad impression to visitors to the forums, especially if you don't know the reasons and story behind it (the swearing).
