Yup that's it Aharon  that's how I verified the date stamps of the ones that are avail now on the other sites.

PS I just added a link to the following, it's a post on fs2000 from Yosuke Ube who along with Hiroshi Igami was one of the key project members. It has a link to a ZIP download (filename: posky_747_fsx_p3d_base_models.zip) which includes original models, FDEs, liveries, paint-kits, panels etc all in one bundle. The liveries are mainly for the pax variant but it does include the models/FDEs for the others

Review part 7: Leg 4

OK, not a review post this one, just a bunch of shots from Leg 5 which I flew over the long weekend. Was intending to do a direct from Singapore to Seoul which is operated by UPS in real life using the B74s but decided to add a stopover at the old Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong on the way past.

Early start for the crew today. Of course IRL they are most likely away even earlier, but there's only one 6 O'clock I know and it's NOT in the morning :sleepy:
Image

Image

Decided to mix things up a little (so adventurous ) and take the Singapore Cargo B744F for a spin to Hong Kong. This machine 9V-SFF (msn:28026) was bought new by the airline in 1997 and would have flown this leg itself a few times know doubt. Interesting story about 9V-SFF is that after changing hands it had an incident with it's new operator when landing in Halifax Canada, over-running the end of the runway resulting in a hull write-off. Fortunately there was no loss of life.
Image

The approach into Kai Tak is spectacular. I'm sure most of us have flown it hundreds of times in the sim, but it never loses it's appeal. Can only imagine how exciting it would be to be piloting one of these beasties into the place
Image

Great views across the harbour to the Island itself and the down-town area.
Image

Only ever got to fly here IRL once, back in the mid-90's. Couldn't believe my eyes re how close we were to the apartment buildings as we got down low for the final approach
Image

The gratuitous street-view shot
Image

Nice short taxi back to the apron, even shorter one for departures for RWY13. Pretty simple layout this place, must have been a pretty crazy place to manage in the day with all the traffic pumping through the place
Image

All parked up on the apron. This scenery is Kai Tak from FlyTampa and looks pretty snazzy in P3D, has a default set of static ground aircraft which you can see splattered about in this shot. Some real grungy old weathered war-horses like the DragonAir and Korean 74s next to me here.

Image

And that's it for now. Do check out my video of the landing if you missed that post.

Great screenshots and great approach path

Surprised me that P3D does not offer default checker board hill for that airport.

14 years ago when I decided to go to that airport for first time via FSX using POSKY A330-200, I made successful landing only to be surprised to see a wing flying in front of across my cockpit window. Turned out that I made successful landing and lost left wing yet the plane was still standing fine on the runway after touchdown.

Another helpful suggestion from Mark was to grab the FS9/X P&W 4060 sound pack for the B744 series by FS sound engineer Benoit Plamondon. As Mark pointed out to me these sound packs work best when tuned to work well with aircraft itself and this one from Benoit is a cracker, works well with P3D and sounds fabulous.

With regard to "DEEKNOW's" mention of my P&W 4060 sound pack recommendation .... separate FS2004 and FSX version of this were compiled by Benoit PLAMONDON for the POSKY B744 and B74LCF, and SKYSPIRIT B762 and B763 simulations.

The following linked information is a presentation I compiled in order to promote this audio .... and which is supported by the FS.COM files names for each sound pack, audio-video presentation of these sound packs in action, along supporting imagery relating to each of the 3D models for which this audio is intended ....

"NEW B747-400 & B767-200/300 P&W 4060 SOUNDPACKS FOR FSX & FS2004"
https://tonymadgehjg.proboards.com/thre ... fs2004-fsx

These sound packs are engineered to best work using the POSKY and SKYSPIRIT FDE files (both CFG and AIR data .... compiled in accordance with specific AIR.FILE stated data). Benoit's sound packs are all produced from HQ exterior and interior recordings.

Also available for the POSKY B747's and SKYPIRIT 767's are the following aircraft/engine type specific sound packs by Benoit PLAMONDON .... as per my following linked presentations for each. These sound packs are similarly compiled as separate FS2004 and FSX specific versions. The following presentations also list FS.COM file names for each file along with audio-visual previews for each as wel l....

"NEW P&W JT9D B747-100/200/300/SP & B767-200/300 SOUNDPACKS FOR FSX & FS2004"
https://tonymadgehjg.proboards.com/thre ... fs2004-fsx

"NEW FSX & FS2004 GE CF6-50 SOUNDPACKS .... FOR POSKY B747-200/300 SIMULATIONS"
https://tonymadgehjg.proboards.com/thre ... cks-fs2004

Benoit was additionally intending to produce RR RB-211 (and later version) sound packs for the POSKY/SKYSPIRIT B747's and B767's but these have yet to be released.

Benoit's one of my HJG colleagues .... being HJG audio engineer (a now retired 45+ year civil aviation professional) .... but .... he also produces audio for other FS projects unrelated to HJG and has been commissioned to produce audio for a number of FS payware projects as well. His FS audio-visual channel can be viewed per the following link ....

https://www.youtube.com/@BenoitPlamondon

He's actually "one of" the best FS2004 and FSX audio engineers in the world .... since FS audio doesn't really get better than what he produces by virtue of the fact all of his work is based on RW recordings ;)

Thanks for the info Mark. Some great stuff there from Benoit!!

If anyone is trying to source the files you may have noticed flightsim.com have completely revamped their forum and downloads area and the search is now quite tricky to use. Any old links you may have to the downloads wont work now, but you can get to them direct (for now) from here...

https://forums.flightsim.com/files/file ... -b747-400/

FSX PW4060 Sounds B767

You can also browse the entire collection of FSX related sounds here like you used to on the old site. The new design does look good, guess it's just a matter of time to adapt to it

Review part 8: the "default" CDU/FMC

Decided to continue this Pacific ring route leaving from Kai Tak where the last leg finished. This time we're jumping aboard Cargolux machine LX-GCV sporting the old colour scheme from the 90's. Love this shot coz it highlights the proximity to the adjacent buildings at the old airport location.

Image

In this post am gonna be reverting the panel back to the regular B747-400 FSX enhanced panel that most bundled Posky 747s ship with. So I've removed all the ISG pay-ware gauges and basically set the aircraft back to standard. The only thing I left in was my custom tweak to the HSI panel that swaps the original decision-height knob for my custom course-heading selector (DM me if you want that tweak as a file)

Flight: Hong Kong Kai Tak to Seoul Incheon, Korea (ICN/RKSI)

Fairly straight forward route here, gentle arc on a couple of airways heading north to South Korea and with todays winds a straight in approach to the north. Navigraph not showing VHHX as a valid departure point even tho it's in the imported flight plan, it's no longer a real world destination but am surprised they don't include it for simmers?

Image

Pushback tricky here with all the 744 freighters parked up at the place, just enough room to squeeze us through the gap.
Image

At the holding point before takeoff for RWY13. Can see the decent texturing of the taxiways and ramp areas on this FlyTampa add-on, it's pretty sweet and very low FPS impact (the static models possibly help)
Image

Let's cover a couple of the gotchas with the CDU/FMC that comes with the panel by default. There's no flight-plan load button (that I could see) in the CDU so it bases its flight plan on whatever you load through the regular P3D flight planner menu. When a flight is active in the P3D planner the leg details will also be in the CDU by default (along with a flight plan in the default GPS as you'd expect). One gotcha with this panel tho is you need to be sure you click "CALC VNAV" after setting CRZ altitude on the PERF INIT page, as per following

Image

If you don't do this and start your flight when you flick to the LEGS page you may see zero in both the airspeed and altitude figures for your waypoints

Image

What will happen then is when you engage the A/P and hit the first zero'd waypoint the A/P will command auto-throttle to 0-knots and begin a V/S descent to 0-feet altitude. Probably not desirable. All those config issues are highlighted following
Image

So assuming you do have VNAV details in the LEGS page we should be good to go. Departing Kai Tak almost as scenic as arriving, interesting departure procedure tracking a couple of outbound radials on some local VORs and altitude restricted until about 40nm out, then off wee goo to Seoul, Korea
Image

OK hold your horses (or should that be foot-pounds, or engine pressure ratio....). Let's take another look at that LEGS page. You'll notice on mine the first waypoint leaving Kai Tak is below our cruise altitude and has an IAS climb speed of 275 knots which is probably about right? However the cruise speeds are all more of a ground speed looking value (495 in this case) which the aircraft is never gonna achieve as the AP seems to expect IAS values. If this is left alone at the next waypoint the A/T will go to full thrust and exceed max airspeed. I couldn't work out how to avoid this so after loading a flight plan in the default CDU/panel I typically go thru and edit all the legs (which is a bit tedious) on the CDU and set the airspeed to something like 295

Image

On approach to Seoul Incheon now, two pairs of parallel runways not unlike LAX, am opting for RWY33R so it should be a nice short taxi back to the Cargo Terminal. Looks like some snow on the ground. Don't look too close tho, shame there's no Orbx or similar land-class to smarten up the Asian region in general, lemme know if you do know of any?

Image

Another wine about the default CDU and it's a minor thing but if you look at the PROG-ress page during climb phase you will see it's expecting you to be out of fuel before your destination (as circled following). DONT PANIC, once you level out in the cruise it starts showing more likely landing figures, guess it's tough for it to know exactly what the performance figures of the aircraft are and of course in the climb you are burning a LOT of fuel in this old girl

Image

One last gripe is the LNAV tracking. When NAV is engaged on the MCP and if the rotating knob under the glare-shield is set to GPS the aircraft will quite happily follow the GPS legs as displayed on the map for the entire route. If however that knob is set to NAV mode the aircraft seems to want to track back towards the leg you most recently passed. There doesn't seem to be any way to edit the legs page on the CDU to move your next leg up to replace the previous one and the FMC isn't doing that itself as it goes. Not quite sure what's going wrong there but I found it easier just to leave the GPS tracking enabled for now.

Can't really complain coz it's actually quite impressive considering the FMC is done via a single XML gauge. Take a look at the B737_800/fmc.xml file in the panel folder if feeling brave, it's a mastery of reverse-polish-notation and XML taggery. Very scary, but impressive in its own way.

Quick taxi to the cargo terminal and safely tucked away at stand 630. This is a significant airport for South Korea and the cargo apron very busy. Can see here we have a lot of company and this is just the shared stand, Korean have their own dedicated terminal just behind and Asiana one just to the right closer to the runway.

Image

You can see a couple of UPS machines parked here. Interestingly the Cargolux beast I flew on this leg LX-GCV, "City of Esch-sur-Alzette" (msn: 25867) was leased on to UPS in 2011 and flies for them now as N583UP. Coincidentally (I swear this is true) I just looked up it's flight log and at this very moment it is en-route between Sydney and Incheon, check this out
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N58 ... /YSSY/RKSI

verdict on the CDU/FMC?

To be honest I just can't jell with this FMC. They way it's built as an XML gauge is very impressive and there are a bunch of nifty non standard but useful features I haven't mentioned on pages like looking up nearest navigation features and setting nav frequencies to them etc, but for me there are so many ways it deviates from the usual Smiths style FMC/CDU behaviour that it just makes it feel too clumsy. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to recommend you look at spending a few $$ on the ISG gauge pack as an alternative.

Before I wrap up this post I should mention the scenery above is an older FSX title from Overland. Do check out their product page following as my shot of the Cargo apron doesn't do it justice. The passenger terminal is modelled to a much higher level of detail.

When I was a kid being invited to sit on jump seat in cockpit abroad Air Canada 747, the captain pointed to FMC and asked me what it was. Since I was kid, I said I did not know. The captain said it was flight management computer and he proceeded to say that any pilot who could master FMC could master his plane or otherwise if any pilot could not master FMC, then he would be not fit to master his plane.

Great screenshots. I have confession for you. I never use FMC in my FSX flights :)

It seems that there will be new cargo airline serving routes between New Zealand and Australia as seen on this newspaper link below:

Review part 9: first night flight, and "another" panel

We're nearing the end of the review (thank the Gods I hear you say) but this is the leg I was most looking forward to, my YouTube history probably has more entries for spotting vids at the destination airport than anywhere else. We continue in the UPS B744 airframe from Seoul to Anchorage on what will be the penultimate leg of the ring-of-fire.

Flight: UPS 5X99: Seoul Incheon ICN/RKSI to Anchorage Ted-Stevens ANC/PANC

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/5x99

Image

This is an evening departure from Seoul, planning done, fuel and cargo loaded, time to get the show on the road

Image

Apart from a few in-flight shots the main aim for this post is to look at another very excellent VC panel offering. This is the third I've looked at and only just stumbled across it after the recent flightsim.com site update, but this really has to be the ideal solution for now. The VC gauges (and interior model tweaks?) are by Gavin Munro, callout sound files from Jimmy Foong, Doug Dawson's XML sound gauge (that the other panels looked at use) is included and all assembled in a bundle from Trent? (aka Wheelie Bin Studios)

https://www.flightsim.com/files/file/20 ... t-upgrade/

Image

At first blush it might not look too different but there are LOADS more interactive elements on the main panel and overhead compared the one I looked at earlier. Both are mods to the original FSX B747 panel, and both seem to work fine in P3D, but this one has a lot more going for it and the improvements make for a much more realistic cold-n-dark to start-up-experience overall.

as described by the collator..

increased functionality (EICAS, EFIS, TCAS and much more), this package introduces emissive and dome lighting to the VC. Landing, taxi and navigation lights have been decoupled on the exterior model. Other enhancements include animated wipers, switchable and dimmable MFDs and a max autopilot bank bezel among other things

There's no point in replicating any content from the useful manual that ships with the panel, best thing right now for anyone looking for an FSX/P3D panel for your 744 is to grab this bundle and adapt it to your local install. The file is defaultimate747.zip and available at flightsim.com as of March 2023.

Apart from the lighting and many overhead improvements the other big thing that stands out is the EICAS panel displays. On the last panel you had the Engines/Status page for the lower panel and that was it, with no interactive page selector. This was why I started to build a replacement of my own and initially created a fuel flow page. Thankfully I didn't go further at that point as Gavin's gauges now include Electrics, Fuel, ECS/Air, Hydraulics, Doors and Gear.

Image

note: The brake temps and tyre pressure aren't active on the Gear page but it does show gear up/down status. Also the Doors page will be static unless you also configure the Ground Handling gauge as described in the manual and use that to open/close the doors, you can see in my screenshot above all doors currently open when used that way.

With the new panel the start-up sequence is much more satisfying. I've bolted my preferred ND/PFD/CDU combo from ISG onto the panel (unfortunately the VC model doesn't seem to have anywhere to expose the CDU so I'm using a 2D popup panel for now). Engines started, nice short run from the cargo apron down taxiway Delta for a take-off on RWY15L

Image

This was my first evening flight and luckily the runway lights are nicely illuminated on the RKSI scenery, it's an old title though and the taxi way textures were a bit naff and harder to spot, but yellow placards aplenty so no probs really. Exciting departing from a big airport like this at night, the glow from the terminal buildings and the runway were pretty spectacular.

No real surprises along the way re the panel, or aircraft, except I forgot to add the ISG LNAV/VNAV toggle buttons to the panel.cfg so ended up having to use HDG select for lateral nav. The flight was mostly on 4x sim speed to pretty painless to keep on track along the way. Will sort that though before the final leg. Sunrise an hour or so out from our destination, slipped back to 1xSpeed to watch that for a bit

Image

Morning definitely broken now, time to start the descent planning

Image

Land ahoy. The vastness of Alaska and northern Canada and lack of visible human presence really is mind blowing, you get a good feel for it in full daylight when the cloud breaks.

Image

One thing I've noticed watching a lot of real world big jet approaches online is they often seem to hit a low cloud, sea mist sort of thing very close to the final approach to Anchorage. I was therefore not disappointed when ActiveSky served up these tasty live real-world conditions as I was turning to pickup the Localiser

Image

Really love this overlay on the Navigraph client, you can show either the STAR or the ILS plate overtop of your enroute info, pretty snazzy. Pretty straight forward approach here straight into RWY7R, with a bail-out quickly to the right on missed

Image

Nice and clear above the aerodrome on finals

Image

And all good to land RWY7R, those mountains in the background look menacing but there's plenty of space for a go-around and circuit (I practiced that a few times earlier)

Image

Clear of 7R and a quick glance left for any departing traffic on the adjacent 7L.

Image

Before a slow crawl along taxiway Romeo beside 15/33 to get down to the cargo apron at the north end of the aerodrome. This place is HEAVEN for cargo fans. AIG doing a pretty representative rendering of real world traffic here with 747s. 777s and MD11s galore from everyone from Fedex, UPS, Atlas, China Southern, DHL, Korean... the list goes on. Spectacular

Image

Turn into the UPS apron area, find a bay, and shut down for the day. These posts were not going to be scenery reviews but this one from SimWings (retailed by Aerosoft and Orbx) is still worth a look if you're running FSX or P3D. It was originally released as an FSX title, had some jzuzh-ing of textures along the way and still looks pretty decent, grab it if you see it on sale. There is something I can't work out causing frame-hits in two very specific spots on the scenery, could be fencing, or a vehicle or something.

Image

And just coz I'm a fan of spotting videos here, why not some virtual spotting of my own :-)

Image

OK, that's it for now. One more post (probably) back to UPS world-port to wrap up the circuit and review. Hope you enjoyed this.
