I'm starting to take quite a liking to helos and would like to purchase a payware to play in. So just a question to the helo boys, what would you consider to be the best product out there, I was looking at the huey from aerosoft, and quite like the look of Nemeths Super Stallion.

Dodosim Jet ranger is the best flightsim chopper as far as realism is concerned.

Your right there Dave , but find the Ranger , not my type of chopper the Nemeth CH-53 is great and is very cheap , Aerosoft UH-1 is Brill - recent release the AW109 is not the type RNZAF getting but with a Matt 'Jeansy' Levi paint on it i,m damn happy with it .

Dodo for absolute realism, anything from Nemeth for just hooning around laugh.gif

I have their Hughes 500 and their Huey and enjoy them both.

Got remember Gary , CH53 has no cheat start has to be done by the procedure , they AS Huey is tricky,r to fly , the Nemeths 500 , Huey or 109 they are the hoon around type smile.gif

As mentioned the Dodosim 206 is the best available for FSX in terms of realism.
The Aerosoft Huey X package is a close second. As for it being hard to fly, I have found it fairly easy, at least in terms of the flight model. The Huey is a fairly stable helicopter to begin with. It responds well to control inputs. A lot more docile than some of the zippier choppers going around anyway.

Nemeth comes in third I guess and beyond that there ins't a lot else...

Oh the Schweizer 300CBi is a fair model I guess.

And another I just thought of that is actually quite good... The Lama X package (if you like those older style choppers).

Good luck smile.gif

Was comparing between the Nemeth/Aerosft , you can land Nemeths on a matchstick head were Aerosoft makes it that far more realistic and compare tricky

You must have practised a lot more than me. I can generally get the initial impact on the runway but after that ... the only way I could be reasonably sure of landing on a matchstick head would be to tape it to the skid before I took off laugh.gif

Have you got rudder/ torque pedals already? If not, that should be high on the list to get the best out a chopper

+1 on that! Definitely an essential item for flying the choppers.

Hate to put a dampner on things but I've been pretty disapointed with Helos (payware or otherwise), no matter what you spend the landing experience seems pretty lame. The only way I've found to touch-down with any semblence of realism or comfort is to switch to spot view at which point you can actually get a sense of pitch and position before the skids hit the dirt. Seems pretty much impossible from a VC view, I even bought TrackIR hoping it would be better but only makes a marginal difference IMHO.

Whats everyone else's experience? Can see pedals and torque controls helping with realism but not with the perspective you have from inside the cockpit which seems to be critical

The only problem with flying helicopters on the sim is the lack of depth perception. Putting down on a specific pad is quite difficult but the technique is the same as flying one in real life. I can fly the Dodo JR with just the twist grip on the joystick ok but non self centering pedals is probably the way to go. The spring in the joystick makes life a bit difficult aswell.

I heard one of the rescue pilots form Waikato hospital talk about thier heli sim based on Microsoft flight simulator and said that landing a chopper in the sim is harder than in real life because of what you just mentioned. No real depth perception and lack of pherifrial vision.

Yes the view points are tricky. I agree that Track IR does not really improve the situation much and in fact can sometimes make it worse.
Give yourself a fighting chance and use the realism settings to suit. Keep ramping them up when you gain experience. I find that flying a heli with lower cockpit windows a lot easier.
Really it is just practice and making sure you look around and not fixate dead ahead or on the object you are trying to land on. Just like the real world it isn't easy when learning.
