Clear Out

Discuss aircraft addons and repaints for Flight Simulator here

Something that I read on a forum (cannot remember which one sadly) has got me thinking..........which I do occasionally but not very often!! I read that a FS user had cleared out a lot of aircraft textures that he never used to free up space and also make aircraft selection easier. He said that previously that he had had lots of aircraft paint schemes that he never flew, preferring his 'favourite' aircraft. He said that in real life that he would never have many examples of the same aircraft in different paint schemes, so it was time for a clear out of unused paint schemes. How true!!!

This got me thinking. So often I am scrolling through a long list of aircraft to find what I want to fly, then scrolling down through paint schemes that I never fly, so I am going to follow his lead and delete some of those paint schemes that I have never flown. Perhaps a couple of variations for each aircraft will suffice, but I know that some (like the C172) have got out of hand. Too many free paint schemes to download, so the hangar has become very crowded. Many I have installed, tried out, then gone back to my favourite aircraft. Also, not much point in having lots of European registered aircraft if all the flying is done outside of Europe.

So whilst I am waiting for Intel to sort out the problems with their Sandy Bridge chipsets, then I will have a good tidy up of the hangar. Delete button at the ready.

Smooth landings.

That's not a bad idea really. A spring clean in Summer never hurt anyone smile.gif

Forgive me if you've heard all this before, but here is what I do. Since I have the hard drive space, I don't see the need to 'delete' completely.

To remove a bunch of repaints I'll never use, I simply change the [flightsim.1] numbers of the repaints in question to [flightsim.x]. They don't show up then in my menu, nor slow the sim down on loading. This way saves me from finding, and re-downloading a repaint should I wish to use it again sometime. I installed it for a reason once, it's likely I might want it back again at some point laugh.gif

To remove aircraft I don't fly, but might want to fly one day, I simply change the aircraft cfg to "aircraft_bak.cfg". Or any sort of combination of your choosing. The aircraft is as good as deleted now as far as the program is concerned.

I even do this with default aircraft that come with FS9 and FSX. I simply rename their configs. That way should I install something that uses a default aircraft sound file, or panel, then I don't have to worry about it not working due to the plane being "deleted". Plus default planes are can be hard to replace without reinstalling. This way they are gone from my menu since I never fly them, and that one rainy day per year that I might want to fly it, it's a simple case to reactivate.

Cheers
