Hi, folks!

Now that SOH's Steve "Duckie" Bryant has released his tremendous P-40N paintkit, this one here is about to hit the skies:

Dont mind the red fuselage ribbon: It's for adjustment purposes only!
Anything correct with the roundels?
And what about the fin flash? It's more or less guesswork - are there any sources for the size and the aspect ratio?
Any remarks - as usual - appreciated

Cheers,
Markus.

Thanks, guys!

I think the fin flash with equal bar widths won't be wrong, eh?

And as Gloria Lyons is concerned:
How could I reject it with references such as these?

Hi Markus
Looking really good. Just wish the models and your repaints were available for FSX. I do think that the roundel bars need to be a bit fatter and longer to match those that appear in the reference websites you posted for example see where the bars meet the fuselage stripes just behind the cockpit. Also the aerial should be Olive Drab instead of white. Sorry don't mean to be knit picky. Cheers Bruce

Hi, Bruce!

Thanks for your reply.
I'm quite convinced the IRIS P-40 will work in FSX, maybe there's a solvable propdisk issue.
I'll give them a try in FSX (which I have installed for these testing purposes only...)

Concerning the insignia:
Taking a deeper look at the photo of real "Esma Lee", I'm pretty sure she wore blue outlined bars, quite visible at her lower wing.
I've created the roundel basing on this reference:

So I took the overpainted roundel #5 (R.10n) for the wings and #6 (R.11k) for the fuselage.
Note the different sizes of the inner white ring on both versions which I've also taken into account.

Gloria Lyons seems to bear the not-blue-outlined bars (#9) instead, and of course my rendition will get them!

Cheers,
Markus.

Testing completed:
She works quite fine in FSX-SP2:

Propdisk and animations come around nicely, only the canopy glass is a little too lucent and does not show.
Any FSX users here knowing a workaround for this issue?

Hi markus the program you want for changing the glass is dxtbmpx and you also do most prop fixes from FS9 to FSX as well can be downloaded from

Hi Markus
Thanks for the info regarding FSX compatibility. Everytime I look at your paint job, I start salivating! I had to laugh to see old Warren Russell's sheet on RNZAF roundels....it made me dig out my copy of his Corsair Special as I haven't looked at it for years. Anyway I dusted off a few other books and attached are a few images for your reference (this model and for Gloria). Although I couldn't find anything on Esma Lee, I could find pictures of P-40N s of similar vintage including the Servicing Units she would have been part of. It looks like similar aircraft had white stripes on the upper wing and the fuselage stripe overlapped the roundel bar just behind the canopy. It also appears that Gloria had blue borders on the fuselage roundel bars and maybe not on the wings. Hopefully, you can make out my added text after photo resizing. In not PM me and I can email larger >1.5MB copies. And sorry about the quality...handheld camera as I don't have a scanner.

Hope that this helps.

Does anyone else have any other photos?

Cheers
Bruce

Thanks a lot for these awesome shots, Bruce!
Alas, they seem to approve my conclusion that nearly each Kiwi Kittyhawk has a slighty differing scheme.

The first Gloria to be rolled out will be the first one christened as such: NZ3148.
I've found only one pic of her:

See? Blue outlined bars.

And this is her current status:

The IRIS P-40N obviously is the "long-tailed" Kitty. To keep the roundel&bar within proportion, the forward bar should not overlap the white ID band.

Cheers,
Markus.

Thanks a lot!
Just can't stop adding dirt&stain&smudge&shades on this one:
The layer stack is up 30 and counting...

@ Ian:
That would be great!
Gloria "1" is in the holding pattern, waiting for some more pics...

Wow Markus....the weathering/aging detail that you have done is fantastic. It must have taken you ages. I love what you have done so far.
Don't know how difficult this is to do but would you be able to produce a version that has a more pinky white tint overall to reflect the coral runway dust and post the screen shot here? I am curious to see what the a/c would look like as the photo shows it looking pretty 'milky'.

What other liveries/identities have you done and are planning? Are we able to get a copy of these repaints once you are finished? rolleyes.gif

Cheers
Bruce

And yes: It took some time to get her appearing worn like this...

Humm - the problem with any wheathering (apart from it being a question of taste) is that the result will show quite different, depending on the user's custom graphic setup and settings.
Pretty hard to tell when the dirt is overdone.
For NZ3148, I tried to depict the upper surfaces of wings and front fuselage in a faded colour, as they were exposed to the glazing sun the most.
An additional "crushed coral dust" layer might lead to an exaggerated rate of "bleach" - but I'll give it a try!

Yes of course!
Repainting without sharing doesn't make any sense at all!
My kiwi-related paints are carefully collected by Adamski on his splendid site
http://www.nzfsim.org/

All the stuff I've ever released (approx. 50 repaints) is available at Flightsim.com (and most of it at AVSIM.com too), just do a search for my last name "Hellwig", and you'll get them.
Pretty much "Canuck" paints there...

Next in line will be a further version of Gloria Lyons (guess which... rolleyes.gif )

Cheers,
Markus.
