NAC F-27 'ZK-BXF', 1971 livery

Postby Wildbillkelso » Tue May 12, 2015 11:03 pm

Dear gentlemen!

Since the new JF Fokker F-27 Friendship obviously will have a solid number of repaints in its wake, I think it'll be better not to inflate the initial F-27 thread will all those coming from my humble paint shed.
Coming up soon will be NAC's 'ZK-BXF' in its 1971 lazy repainter's red ribbon livery (early WIP, don't mind the foremost passenger window, it's already cut in):

What do you think about the blue shade of the NAC lettering? Does it match?
Note the tiny decals on the aft fuselage: As far as I can tell from the reference image, there should be an IATA logo and a Royal Mail crest. The latter one might not be an exact reprensenation, but it was the only one I could find...

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks in advance,
Markus.

Thanks for applying your expert eye, mate!
Initially I thought it was a matter of perspective, since this bird was sticked to the tail textures actually in a circle:

But the screeshot in fact reveals some distorsion to the length:

So obviously the textures do get a little stretched when wrapped around the model (about 105%). Not too hard to compensate this:

Seems I have to go for the rego as well...
Talking about regos:
Since the NAC/ANZ F-27s were said to be used on domestic routes only, may I presume that - according to the CAA regulations, as I remember them - any underwing rego was obsolete?
Or did they carry one (just in case of a longer hop...)?

Cheers,
Markus.

Early paints had rego on the top off the wing and the NAC logo but these were deleted removed in the late 60's .

Not all NAC F27s did domestic work only.
They took over the flights to YSNF Norfolk Island when the Qantas DC-4s to there were finally retired.
Heres a pic of ZK-NAO at YSNF in 1976........

Correct Ian, both the quick examples i gave were 500s.
The FIRST ever NZ Friendship into YSNF was F27-100 ZK-BXC ("Koweka"), on 30th June 1973, flown by Captain Jim Pavitt.
NAC started full time Friendship flights there in June 1975, after final retirement of the Qantas DC-4s.

Please note Markus,.............
The prop tips of the era were still YELLOW, same as the previous 2 NAC liveries.
The red and white striped tips started in the "Wings of the Nation" NAC livery, and through all the Air New Zealand liveries.

I guess gone the transition periods were there is little or no public opinion , strangely to aircrew had more voice to put to management about required types best use for them back in the day .

Thanks for this important detail, mate!
I wasn't yet able to acquire an image of this version with engines not running...

Those F-27s really did live in Hokitika , a brilliant aircraft for this region .. little snippet left off the photo , that has has to be a DC-3 :)

BXG "Kea" also received the NAC/ANZ transitional scheme later on:

By the way:
What did this bird-shaped symbol underneath the cockpit's side window, adjacent to the NAC godwit stand for?

Cheers,
Markus.

Anyone got these repaints for the JF F27 Friendship by Markus? I'd like them please, if possible. I can't find them anywhere else as they were exclusive to NZFF. I believe he did more than one NZ repaint for the JF F27. Also Tupolev114 did some too as well, a DCA one and a Mount Cook one and also ZK-RTA. He had them on facebook but it's gone. Thanks in advance.
