What causes fence posts, poles and runway markings to shimmer during take-off and where should I look to make adjustments.?

Look at: filtering; anti-aliasing; screen resolution.

Tried filtering on both Bilinear and trilinear and no effect. Anti-aliasing is Off on Sim but not sure how to tackle my graphics card,
Geforce 8800GTS. Screen resolution is set at 1680x1050 which recommended to this monitor.

I know it isn't going to be easy, but I think you really need to look at nHancer, which is probably the only way you'll get a good anti-alias.

Does nHancer work for a FX5100 card?

Thanks Robin. I am quite willing to work on it. I will google nHancer and see how I go from there. No doubt there is some info on here about it.

Try the nVidia tool "hNancer" - it explains the various settings - and allows you to store profiles.

Thanks for that. It may be a bit technical for me but I will read up and give it a go.
My main problem is taxi-way markings appear like 'tracer bullets' when taxi-ing etc.

My son had 'shimmers' on trees and some buildings. A reduction of the mip mapping quality seemed to solve it. We still get small shimmering on fences, though - different graphics cards.

It sounds like Pato's problem might be lack of anti aliasing -- here's a runway centre line before and after, the only change is that antialiasing is turned on in FSX for the bottom shot.

Thanks for the suggestion Goff but it made no difference to the shimmer and reduced quality of display.

Yes. That looks like my problem and those markings move like 'tracer bullets'. Now I just need to fix or improve it LOL!!

Have you got "anisotrophic filtering" set to ON? I have mine set to tri-linear. If I turn it right off then *everything* shimmers ;-)

That's a setting in FS (display) - though I think you can change the quality/amount in nHancer as well.

Yes. I have tried both Bilinear and Trilinear and it makes no difference. Haven't got as far as nHancer as yet. Thought I
would try everything else before that LOL.

What about increasing the draw distance or something similar in the .cfg?

Better wait for someine to check this first though. Not sure if it is the same with FSX as FS9

I will try anything to improve it. Others must have had similar problems so I am sure it will be fixed eventually.

Does anything else shimmer? If so ... what? ... and is it distance related?

I sometimes get a weird kind of GFX corruption where buildings (or other objects) flip rapidly from black to white (or filled with texture/no texture) - sometimes diagonally across the object, if you know what I mean. If this is happening to every texture along a fence ... or runway ...

I think FSX leaks like a sieve, so these "features" (bugs in my language) sometimes build up with time. A reboot cures it. I have 4GB RAM and a 512Mb 8800 GTS .... grrrrrrr! Personally, I also blame VISTA - which just eats hardware even when it's just sat there doing nothing. It's a worse crock of pooh than the notorious Windows Millenium, IMHO.

I am not sure 'shimmer' is the right term. When I am moving, the runway or taxi lines move like "tracer bullets". Toprob's pictures show it quite well if you imagine those lines moving.

I've noticed quite an improvement if you go 'full screen' rather than having the menu.

That is interesting. Thanks for the tip.
