Which NZ fsx mesh is best? J.Harris or T.Trewin?

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Since starting my world tour i have been using Thomas Trewin's 76m mesh, it covers Aussie, Indonesia and New Zealand. It has been great but recently i found a new mesh by J.Harris created just recently. I was wondering if anyone had swapped over and if they found it to be any good. Both can be found here.

i have another couple of questions. What is the difference between landclass and mesh?

How do i remove afcads so i don't get a double up?

I did try to search for info on this but couldn't come up with anything.

p.s looking at flying multi-player this week if anyone is interested! :plane:

I suspect that all the 76 metre meshes available are based on SRTM data, except for Christian Stock's.
SRTM data is actually released at 90m resolution, so it is actually lower quality than an actual 76 metre mesh. It also has a number of faults, which are uncorrected in the default FSX mesh, but others have made various attempts to fix the faults.
Christian Stock's mesh is derived from a much higher resolution dataset -- the same set which he used to produce the 20 metre mesh -- so it is more accurate, and doesn't have the SRTM faults.
However it is possible that because his mesh wasn't made specifically for FSX, some of the other meshes may perform better. This is just speculation, and I've had no trouble using his 20 metre mesh in FSX.

Landclass and mesh: in FS terms, mesh only defines the elevation. Landclass defines the use of the land -- in particular, it tells the sim which type of textures to use for a particular area. For instance, landclass defines areas such as city grid, or farmland. The sim then uses a texture which is appropriate to the classification.

Thanks for that! Another question answered and stored in the ol' memory box between the ears.
