MilfordSoundX

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby HardCorePawn » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:34 pm

Hi de ho campers,

Lawries very nice looking NZMF for FS9 has spurred me into finishing off the fix I was doing for NZMF in FSX. Please bear in mind that this scenery is not meant to be as 'complete' as Lawrie's. It only includes:

- Flatten (to remove 800' mountain that the default runway sits on)
- Runway
- Apron + starting locations
- Taxiway
- Helipads
- Moved refueling point
- Added in a 'default' FSS building to give some atmosphere
- Some fences and windsocks

The village and marina are not included at this stage... if enough people want it, I might add them in to a version 2.

Anyway, you can download MilfordSoundX (current version) from here. (Thx to Creator2003 for the hosting space  )

Here are some screenshots to give you an idea of what the scenery is:

and I saved this till last, because I just love the water textures!

IMPORTANT NOTES: This scenery requires the freeware 75m or the payware 20m mesh... If you do not have the payware RBE/SimPilot Topo (why dont you? its fabulous and fixes up lots of problems around NZ), I have now included some flattens that you can use to fix the river/lake altitudes in the NZMF area which fixes the big spikes and ridges in the valleys.

Read the included readme.txt for full details.

Hang on... did you install my scenery? or Philips fix? or both?

Both, actually had the fix installed a while ago, then just added your scenery in this morning....

oh ok... so I assume you do not have the topo then?

what I actually meant was, if you do not have the topo, then you probably do not want to use my scenery (as it needs it), instead use Philips Fix on its own...

To be honest, I never tested that combo... I tested with/without topo, with 20m mesh, with 75m mesh, with default mesh etc... never thought to try using his fix and my scenery together! but if my scenery works with his fix then that is a bonus!

I will try that combination when I get home tonight (after pre-season football practice, so hopefully i will still be able to walk/move)... and just confirm that nothing too weird is happening! ;)

Wow looks really cool. Still two anomalies:

This was taken with the 70m mesh, the Milford Fix posted above, and MilfordSoundX :)

It would be a shame if your awesome addon relied on payware.

Thanks for that... it always pays to have other people test your stuff... as their setup is bound to be different and show up some weird anomalies! <_<

There are actually a few more that I found... I took a fly back up the valley, and the river correction stops halfway, and you end up with big ridges etc...

Anyway, I can replicate the 2 mountains either side of the strip, but I cannot replicate the other one you have shown at the mouth of the river... can you please take a screen shot of:

- Your Scenery Library (so I can get an idea of your scenery priority order)
- Your Scenery Display Settings (so I can get an idea of your mesh complexity and mesh resolution settings etc)

I have a feeling that I am going to have to go ahead and flatten the ridgelines myself (for the Topo-less flyers), rather than trying to work around Philip's fix... It should not be too difficult, as long as I can remember how FSX KML works ;) I should just have to create a few polygons that follow the river and drop it to the same level as the surrounding ground... it should hopefully have less of an impact on the surrounding scenery than Philip's, which takes some rather large chunks out of the hills.

I run FSX with the Topo and 20m mesh, and apart from a couple of cliff faces I'm really happy with NZMF, looks much better than default (will post a couple of screenies in the morning)

Howdy,

just so you don't think I have abandoned this... I have figured out that the reason for the weird anomolies is your (somewhat excessively) high Mesh Resolution settings... I'm not actually aware of any 1m Res mesh ;)

However, I have been carefully redoing my fix, so it should handle any Res you choose to use from 150m to 1m...

It is slightly more time consuming, as I need to be a bit more accurate, but have been making steady progress. The main problem is my Virgo nature, which means it needs to be 'just right'... and I have been getting some 'interesting' artifacts due to my sloping flattens not being quite right...

On the positive side, doing it at a 1m resolution results in less effect on the surrounding terrain and seems to blend better... so you dont end up with big chunks cut out of the hills :)

I hope to have this finished in the next week or so... In the meantime, if it's bothering you, all I can suggest is to drop the mesh res down to 19m and the anomalies should disappear...

Ok... my missus has gone to Wellywood for the weekend, so I can do silly things like sit up until 3am drinking beer and mucking about... So I have updated this scenery... <_<

It now includes a set of flattens for those without the payware RBE/SimPilotExperience 'Roads and Rivers of NZ' (aka, NZ Topo)... Please read the installation instructions carefully... basically it works as follows:

  • If you have the Topo, then only install MilfordSoundX and the ARP.bgl as instructed
  • If you do not have the Topo, install MilfordSoundX, the ARP.bgl AND the MilfordSoundXFlattens as instructed

Link is still the same: http://www.skydivesingleton.net/creator200...lfordSoundX.zip

again, thanks to Creator2003 for the hosting space

One last thing... If you have the NZMF fix by Philip Middlemiss uninstall or deactivate it before using this scenery...

If you have still have problems, let me know... and I'll see if I can mirror it somewhere else
