AFS2 Chatham Islands

Postby emfrat » Fri Sep 24, 2021 7:52 pm

Earlier today I uploaded to Flight-Sim.org a photoscenery for the Chathams. It should be available once it is approved - tomorrow our time if I got it right.

Wow Geoffkiwi has the whole S Island in there!
But: there's a bunch of other SI stuff, is this complementary or duplication?

Charl, from memory, user 'perokee' made mesh for the whole island, and photoscenery up to about 60nm north of Dunedin. Nothing wrong with his work.
I don't know how AFS2 deals with duplicate mesh files - FSX would always use the highest resolution one - so I decided to standardise on GeoffKiwi's later work, which covered all of Rakiura.
In AFS2, mesh file tiles (maph*), and scenery tiles (map*) use the same filenames regardless of the source, so if you load a different set it will overwrite the first one. I created 'safe' folders to quickly swap the different filesets, for testing, and I could not see much difference.

Thanks Mike, I don't see your upload, maybe after the weekend, eh?
Maybe you'll have to show us a screen or three.

Good morning, Charl - there's only one chap looking after the filebase, but I think they let him sleep now and again. Didn't get any errors after pressing 'Submit' , so fingers crossed.
In the meantime, you might enjoy this video, but not unless you kill the accompaniment at 4m18s.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvQ10CPh2sY - shows an approach and landing, Pitt Island Airstrip

And some pics as requested - fortunately the satellite caught the Air Chathams Cessna 206 on the ground, otherwise I'd still be looking for the strip

Plus a round dozen of a round-engined round trip of the mainland.

Cool stuff.
I'm fairly conflicted about AFS2. Often it looks equal to or better than the new MS offering. But then it generally stops short in some way.
It's a shame it couldn't have had a huge development team behind it

And millions of dollars ! I'm sure there is satellite imagery which would provide the sort of resolution I want to see below 2000' AGL, but the Toys-for-Ghanpa Fund does not run to that :(

Cheers

Well, it's there now, thanks to Michael (IZ0JUB) for putting me on the right track.
The trouble with being a know-it-all is that you occasionally find that you don't quite know everything

A great serie of marvelous shots of this little part of our beautiful earth...and, as I'm also often fly via AFS2, this FS deserves more attention from professional add-on makers...but like already stated in this and other
posts of nice and photoreal AFS2-shots --> it's all about money & revenu of commercialisation that counts and that isn't in flavor of IPACS' product AFS2 regarding large players in the FS-world like MSFS, P3D and XP.

Luckely that a number of AFS2-enthousiast keep making beautiful sceneries from so much different places worldwide to please the virtual flightcommunity who remain using AFS2. From IPACS development themselfs
the progress for their product goes too slow and the AFS2-users are waiting since a long time on further expansions on scenery, planes and esentials like real looking watersurface(with waves), weather-generation,....
