OK , with my plight, seriously something gave up, I have to say I take programs in and out and back in again and file sizes change hugely weather its aircraft models or scenery, latest today was the NZ AGN from Kelvin, which I have and course Doug's latest West Coast photo-real , bugger and .. would have loved a compare screen , really only thing I lost was was other work, end off the day ... always I come back with better ideas.

So the return .. PC doing the Defrag then be a complete install ....... I going to install VLC first then all the home grown .

Well Ian I can relate to your problems. Is it not Murphy's law that when you finally have FSX sorted (well mostly) that you get a PC malfunction or disk crash. In my case a HD error which was not a problem with the HD but a HP glitch that causes the HD to say I am broken and the only fix - you guessed it a complete re-clean from Windows up after wiping the disk clean, problem fixed - OH where is FSX, bugger bugger!. I have learnt the hard way to keep it all backed up, great you think, you start rebuilding from scratch and hey presto the power supply fails on the back up disk - ain't life grand. So now with the power supply fixed it is back to the long rebuild but at least you have the benefit of a clean template to work with and can rebuild the way it suits.

Two things that have done wonders as far as I am concerned.

1) All scenery except default and ORBX sits outside of FSX in a separate directory and putting that back is time consuming but you sure get rid of a lot of crap on the way.
2) I have created multiple directories on the sim objects in groups by date (1910-1945, 1945-1960, 1960-1980, 1980-2000, 2000 on). I reinstall the models and then check them and move them into the subdirectory. Outcome very few unwanted aircraft in the actual sim folder and the ability to swap into different eras effortlessly.
3) A total wipe off the gauges crap that seemed to have accumulated and it is very lean now.

Outcome, FSX reloads now in less than a minute and once menu selections are made the flight situation will load in less than a minute as well. I am chuffed, seems it was a simple solution to strip it down and compartmentalised it all in a way that works really well.

I can only figure that I must have simmers disease seriously because after about a month I have reinstalled all the aeroplanes but the scenery is taking forever only got as far as OZ and NZ and bits of the Pacific so far. Redoing Japan and the Northern Pacific will take well what it takes. Phew!

I was checking this autogen package specific just for real , this AGN was design for a lower res photo so when put on a hi res the AGN expand's to a stage it takes over the scenery, I did a few compares and the standard bush/tree is four to five times it should be , so that add won't be used until a way to reduce it, one off things you pick up .... pointless having all these top aircraft and not being able to use them because inflated AGN.

It was this addon that crashed the PC , understand and see the reason why, also found the mapping not to around Hokitika for example, in on the plain s around this region is grazing paddocks mainly for cows.
