Where to begin with scenery addons?

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby samk115 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 2:55 pm

Well, i can honestly say joining the forums has been an eye opener for myself and my humble FSX (now steam edition) install.

Currently i have just been playing basically a vanilla version of the game, but after seeing some of the amazing looking scenery some of you folks are running, id love to know where i should start?

Id really like something quite detailed around the wanaka area, as this is where i grew up and have spent a lot of time hunting in the hills around there, i quite enjoy flying the little R22 up amongst the hills where i know i have been hunting, so some better looking scenery would be awesome.
If it extended out across the crown range towards queenstown that would be brilliant too!!

Does anybody have some reccomendations and where i should begin? Im basically a complete newbie to this so any pointers would be fantastic!!

Thanks kindly
Sam

Hi Sam
Normally I wouldn't jump right in with the hard-sell, but in your case I think you'd be an ideal candidate for my Subscription. It currently includes the Wanaka area, and will eventually encompass Queenstown. There is a Wanaka airport included, but there may not be a NZQN until well after the subscription has finished.
At the moment a little over half the Subscription is complete, about 6.5 GB.
It does cost $99, but you can make 3 monthly payments of $33 if you wish. This is a good way to try it out -- pay the first installment, download all the available scenery so far, yours to keep, with the option to just cancel further installments. You'll lose access to the site, but get to keep what you've installed.
However it's unlikely that you'll want to cancel:)

Hi Sam

A good place to start is on Robs site http://www.windowlight.co.nz/

There is some amazing NZ photo scenery there.

also if you go to Flightsim.com there is quite a lot of free NZ scenery there too just do a search for FSX New Zealand scenery

Cheers guys!

Rob, ive just had a look at your website, your work looks awesome!!

I see you have a wanaka and tekapo pack, how much of the wanaka area does this cover? does it include up the lakes (wanaka and hawea) ?

What is its coverage like compared to your subscription work?

Just asking as im only really after this area at the moment, im playing so much elite dangerous at the moment that im not sure if i would make the most of the other scenery icon_redface.gif

Here's the coverage for Real NZ Wanaka. It's a big area, but doesn't include much of the lake. Certainly a good solution in the meantime:

Here's the Subscription coverage to compare:

Go for Rob's subscription series. The best $99 you'll spend.
Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Ive just purchased the Real NZ for now, it will get me going at least. That subscription coverage is HUGE though, i think i can see myself swaying towards it fairly soon! It looks like it covers all my old stomping grounds pretty well!

+1 for Rob's subscription. That picture just shows 3 of the so far 6 completed areas.

Also includes Wellington

And Napier/Hastings

With more every month smile.gif

Apart from Rob's obvious plug ^^ here I would agree, Robs work is fantastic, he has been serving up top quality NZ addons for years and continues to surpass himself with every release, he definitely tops the cards and worth every cent and then some... ORBX have scenery for the North and South Islands, as well as Queenstown and Wanaka airports. These are good mass coverage sceneries but not widely compatible with other sceneries for airports etc without a bit of tweaking. If you are not ready to dive into the payware side of things yet tho there are a number of Freeware sceneries on Flightsim.com and Avsim.com including a number of great airports made by our very own Lawrie... Theres plenty of options available and plenty of opinions too...

Cheers for all the replys!

I am currently loving the real NZ southern lakes scenery, its much nicer than the stock standard!! I also love the detail applied to the wanaka airport, ive spent a decent amount of time around there and can confirm it is very accurate! The Warbirds mission scenery is also fantastic, nothing like a few low inverted fly-bys for fun (one may have been a bit too low however......whoops! Might stick to simming and not take up aerial acrobatics in the near future!)
