A quick poll: Auto-installers

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby toprob » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:22 pm

Since VLC, most VLC-related releases include an auto-installer which places the scenery files in the correct locations, and offers the choice to automatically add the scenery to the FSX Scenery Library. I've been looking at releasing all further scenery this way, including freeware, plus offering a script which other developers can use for their own scenery. (Or any other addon, for that matter, but some work would need to be done on the script.)

The choices here really relate to whether you are happy to let a freeware installer do everything, or everything except updating your scenery.cfg file, or you'd rather control the complete process from start to finish. Bear in mind that my payware projects will always use an auto-installer.

Auto installer is the way to go Rob , so many less questions to be asked if the install is mucked up manually .

There is a quite vocal few on international forums who are totally against auto-installers, so I just needed to check to see what percentage of locals felt this way.
I'm just about to look at re-uploading Coromandel, so I guess it'll now have a fully auto-installer.
If anyone who is producing NZ scenery (or other addons) wants to look into installers, I'm happy to supply some tips and code.
