NZFF

hey guys , might be a silly question but...

I have never really been into photo real scenery, seems abit pixilated bush flying but with VLC I have seen some remarkable screenshots.

Was wondering is ALL of NZ photoreal anywhere as one D/L ???
And is it worth it , at the mo I'm amazingly content with just flying over NZ with VLC.

Help would be greatly appreciatted.

I think the "photo-real" stuff is split over a few [different] sources - some freeware some payware/donationware.

Your first port of call would have to be Rob's stuff (www.windowlight.co.nz). I always want to push this, as Rob's very active here and I'd rather we endorsed his products ourselves than have him accused of using NZFF unfairly to "promote" his sceneries. Anyway - there seem to be a few options there if you want to buy the whole lot (!!).

Mike's Hamilton is another obvious one that springs to mind. It's a beaut!

Then we're about to suffer an Aussie invasion (ORBX). They've already stolen our racehorse, our Pavlova etc. ... now they want to nick our scenery .

As far as "is it worth it"? I'd say most definitely YES - but you may not need to buy *the whole lot* to enjoy NZ just a bit more. That said,I know of one person that hasn't got *any* add-on scenery at all - preferring to have decent framerates throughout ... and still loves it.

It's always toss-up between spending limited money on *aircraft* (or other utils) as opposed the environment in which they operate. Horses for courses.

EDIT: Ooops! Just re-read your post. Do you mean specifically/exclusively *photoreal* as opposed to regular scenery with photoreal some tiles?

From what I've heard and seen in various screens and posts this scenery dosen't really need promotion, it looks briliiant!

No, and unfortunately we don't seem to be getting any closer to having full coverage. NZ has had a couple of goes at photographing the country from top to bottom, but none of these have worked out that well. Originally it was the job of LINZ to distribute aerials as they were released, but a few years ago this became Kiwimage, but I doubt that this will ever become freely -- or even cheaply -- available.

Originally when I started the photoreal scenery, I imagined that it would be a 10 year project, but it's almost 10 years and it has actually become harder to get images, rather than easier.

But most people would probably baulk at a NZ wide download anyway -- in this post, antdavison mentions his NZ-wide coverage for FS2004, at 4.8 m/px, which amounts to 12GB. Take that to to 1.2 metres for FSX, and you'll end up with almost 200GB. NZ doesn't have the sort of internet access which would make this easy... If I dedicated half my bandwidth allowance per month, it would still take me 18 months to download:)

If you are really keen -- but not as keen as ant who built his own -- then you should try Tileproxy. A pain to get working well, but it can give a good idea of what a complete photoreal NZ would look like.
