Coromandel textures problem...

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Bazza » Wed Jan 30, 2008 11:15 am

The two screenies below should clearly show my problem..

On taking off from Coromandel or Whitianga the scenery textures are fine. However shortly into the flight, and over the terrain, it "clicks" back into the textures shown in the second shot. By stopping the flight (alt) and restarting the proper textures return, but only briefly.

I have an AMD Athlon 2.20ghz, 64 x2 Dual Core system, and am running a fairly new Nvidia GeForce 8600GT card. I am not experiencing any other problems within FlightSim or any other application. I have been able to achieve frame rates in the high 50's but reducing this didn't help.

I have also experimented with the various settings, and added more memory, none of which has helped. This problem only seems to occur with the Godzone Coromandel scenery so
perhaps the screenies may suggest a solution to someone better experienced in the scenery side of things.

I assume that this is FS2004, and that you installed the FS2004 version of Coromandel. I've never seen anything resembling the second shot, however I do have a couple of comments.
First, the first shot isn't the Godzone Coromandel photo scenery, it looks like normal textures. Bear in mind however that the photo scenery doesn't go all the way to the top of Coromandel, in fact it doesn't go much past Whitianga, but it should be obvious when it shows up.
There is not much that can go wrong with this type of scenery in FS2004. The main issue results from landclass-type scenery having priority, so it is worthwhile checking to make sure that any landclass scenery is not higher than Coromandel in the Scenery Library. However this normally results in the landclass scenery displaying instead of the photo scenery, it doesn't usually degrade the display like that, so maybe a reinstall is called for.

Thanks for your quick reply.............

Since then I have re-installed the Godzone Coromandel and immediately saw what you meant - it clearly wasn't installed properly before, although why beats me. I can now see a clearly
defined "seam" just south of Coromandel airstrip, and again further North.

This however hasn't improved anything. I have since re-installed Red Baron Topo as well, still no go. A quick flight elsewhere (Rotorua) confirms that the textures there are static, the problem seems to be in the Coromandel area for some reason, although it leaks out into the terrain outside the Godzone Coromandel area as well.

Can you give me a suggestion as the where the following entries should be lodged, and in what order, in the Add-on Scenery Library..

My 75M Terrain Mesh
Red Baron Topo,
Godzone Coromandel.
and anything else you may feel has a bearing.

After years of trouble free simming this has just about got me beat !

Thanks again.

Maybe try a different (new or older) set of graphics card drivers, then deleting your fs9.cfg file? :)

Alex

Edit: Mesh and landclass should be below all other airport/region specific sceneries. Usually you'd also have photoreal or similar sceneries below specific airport sceneries.

Just some things to try: Could you try turning off the 'land detail' textures (under display settings in FS9 from memory)

Otherwise, as Alex mentioned- backup and then delete your config file (FS will rebuild it with defaults)

Firstly, thank you guys for your inputs, having "simmed" since FS98 with few problems, lately everything I touch seems to turn to custard....... Fortunately all of my previous dramas
have been sorted with good advice from this forum.

In this instance I have tried the following.........

I have re-installed everything possible.
I have experimented with Scenery Library positions.
I have reloaded 3 different sets of drivers for my Video Card.
I have tried every combination of setting I could think of.
I have deleted, and re-installed my config file.

None of the above made the slightest bit of difference..

The only thing that works is to crank back the Global Scenery Quality to "LOW." At this level the terrain holds but move it up one step and xxxx happens.

If I transfer my flight to other areas, e.g. the areas between Rotorua and Tokoroa, I can take the GSQ back up to max and there are no problems. For some reason or other
it only seems to be affecting the Coromandel broader area, but clearly not only the Godzone area but that area immediately outside it as well.

Even on LOW, the scenery is quite acceptable and I quess that's about where I am going to remain. I needed to remind myself that it's a Flight Simulator program, not a scenery
one. So when I'm flying the Coromandel, a slight setting adjustment is called for, otherwise I can screw it up to the max.

If it hadn't been for the brilliant work done by some of our members, I wouldn't even be in the Coromandel. However, this sort of problem does my head in and I won't rest till
I sort it. I'll report if (and when) I crack the problem.

As they say, "It all adds to the rich tapestry of Life."

Just to let you know you are not alone with this problem. Since I installed Coromandel I have had exactly the same problem. Everything looks fine until flying for about 1 minute when suddenly all textures go blurry. If left alone they will slowly reload but the same thing happens again. It seems to happen only if Coromandel is in view. I have 20m Mesh, Topo and all Robins sceneries installed.

I started to fault find and discovered disabling the EZ static scenery library fixed the problem though obviously I was missing some objects. I suspect we have another BMP file with a problem, but which one?

Can anyone else comment. I really appreciate the work that has gone into these airports and I'm sure it is a simple fix.

Cheers

Bazza -- based on what cooldad has posted, do you have the Coromandel airports installed? It would be worthwhile deactivating the airports to test the photo scenery. It may be a simple EZ scenery object error.
Incidentally, I don't have any of the recent Coromandel airports installed simply because I won't install the required EZ scenery/Rwy12 libraries. Errant libraries have always been a major problem with this method of scenery design, and in the end I uninstalled all the libraries to protect my simulator installation.
I'm not saying that this is necessarily the problem here, and certainly not detracting from the work done by Laurie and others, just explaining why I can't do any testing here.

Just a stab in the dark...
I had some issues with fences and fixed 'em by renaming everything in Lawrie's scenery folders with ...fce... in it, (as in NZCX_FntHseFce.bgl to NZCX_FntHseFce.bak)
I then put them back one by one until the blurries arrived, and then backed up one notch.
I have most of the fences in now, but, yes, library objects are a pain in the ass and behave unpredictably with other addons.
I have a CTD with FS9 on startup at the moment, and am not sure if it is these, or the givlomh Cloud9 Phantom demo that I uninstalled earlier

Toprob Charl and Cooldad,

I am happy to report that your collective wisdom has got me back up on my feet again.

Initially, I disabled all my Coromandel airports, and after taking off from empty paddocks my scenery remained rock solid - the problem had gone.

I then took the good advice offered, restored the airports and disabled the Static Scenery library. Again the scenery problem was gone and I think it is pretty reasonable to assume that that this is where the problem lies.

Two questions arise from this...........

Why hasn't this affected the other areas that I have installed Lawrie's airport scenery into, i.e. Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Dargaville etc.....?

Why is it that only Cooldad and I seem to have been affected ? I realise that Toprob has not installed these for what appears to be good and valid reasons but what about all the others....?

I have yet to properly check out my airports but no doubt the "eye candy" will have taken a hit. Is there any way of establishing which files are in conflict ?

Try looking at this, fixed blurry textures (airport, A/C and ground) for me, with Lawries scenery installed.

Hi Guys,
I have just installed the Coromandel Photoscenery and Thames and Coromandel Aerodromes (FS9).
I also have the same problem with the scenery blur.
If I have any luck correcting it I'll post again.

Reassuring to hear that others are having the same "intermittent blurrie" problem that I have been experiencing.....have tried all the various recommended fixes that have been posted on the forum recently (and from other FS Forums)...without success.

I too have followed all the threads on offer to this stage and have had no success...........

The two Zinc files in my add-on scenery texture files were not the older versions but were dated Feb 07. However, I replaced them with those in the file pss_ut_updates_1, no change.

Reading further I removed the three other texture files : Zinc 03.bmp, gauges.bmp and planter rims.bmp, still absolutely no difference.

I am left with two options that work for me...

1. Screw back my Global Scenery Quality to LOW
2. Disable the Addon-Scenery "Static Objects File." This of course effectively stuffs up all Lawries recent works.

At this stage, trying options that have been suggested, I am highly qualified in flying out of Coromandel - probably 150 flights.

So...did you try disabling the fences, as suggested above???

Could also try adding an empty "Texture" folder into the scenery's main folder.
The sim looks for 2 folders in any addon scenery, ........ a "Scenery" folder, and a "Texture" folder. (even if the Texture folder is empty).
Add and empty texture folder to any of my sceneries that dont have a texture folder in them (ones that rely totally on library objects). It has solved intermittent blurries for others..............
Any of my recent sceneries have a Texture folder in them, but because Avsim's automated scanning process picks up an empty folder, and then declines the upload, i have put a small bmp texture in the folder called Av2aTxt.bmp. You can safely REMOVE this bmp image, it is not required for the scenery.

Ok, ive just done a wee test on my setup,...................... i REMOVED all the empty texture folders i had in my sceneries, and i got intermittent blurries at a few differrent airports in NZ. Put em back in, and no blurries........................????

With regards to the textures mentioned earlier in this thread, (zinc, guages etc), if i have them in the libray, i do also get the ocaasional blurry. I have removed those named textures out of texture folders from a large number of other addon sceneries by other authors from all over the world, that i used to get the occasional blurry from.

One of the main reasons i DONT include textures (unless they are custom ones), with any of my sceneries, is that if there is more than one instance of a certain texture in any active texture folder aywhere in the sim, the sim will "hunt" between these texture folders containing the same named texture, trying to decide which one its going to use. Usually the sim cant resolve the conflict, and just displays whatever building the texture goes to as a plain white or grey untextured box.
As an example,........... If you have the Nova or Nova Gold texture sets installed in an active texture folder in your sim (mine are in the main FS9 Texture folder), any scenery that uses EZ John B Loney Jr Object sets, (as some of mine do), may display the bulding as blank grey untextured box, because these textures will also be in the Static Objects Library, as well as wherever else you installed that texture set, and also a lot of other addon scenery authors use the Nova and Nova Gold textures, and provide the textures with the scenery in a Texure folder. More conflict........... In one instance, i weeded out the same Nova Gold texture from 87 different addon sceneries in my sim ( i currently have 482 active addon sceneries in my sim).
Answer, .............. only have them in ONE folder, in my case, i have the full Nova and Nova Gold sets in the main FS9 texture folder, and have removed them from the Static Objects Library, and also removed them from any freeware addon airport scenery texture folder that i have download and installed in the sim. The bgl file in the scenery folder for whatever that particular object is, WILL find the texture for it, no matter where it is, as long as its in an active Texture folder in the sim.
The same can be said of Runway-12, EZ Scenery, and countless other types of object and texture sets available. The named texture itself, should ONLY be in ONE location.

At this stage, I think I can safely add that the problem has been sorted.

I followed the advice by Charl, and removed all the fences in Coromandel (CX) and Whitianga (WT) these being the areas that seemed to be giving me the most grief.

My scenery now appears to be correct and static. Another issue I was starting to wonder about was that some planes seemed to trigger the effect more than others however this is no longer the case.

EDIT.

I have reloaded the fence files and can report, that at least in my case, the following two files are causing the dreaded blurries, both Whitianga fence files : NZWT AerClbBarFce.bgl and NZWT AprnBarFce,bgl.

The Coromandel airport fence files have all be reloaded and seem to be OK.

Hopefully this may assist someone else.

Hmm, really strange, myself and a lot of others dont have a problem with those 2. They are actually the low log barrier fences behind the aeroclub building and car park. I am currently doing a full re-build of Whitianga to fit the new freeware Godzone "Coromandel Peninsula" photoreal scenery, and will make sure i leave those out of it. My previous version ws built to fit the RBE NZ Topo scenery in FS9. There will be less added buildings etc in this new version, as Ian Warren has been a very busy boy doing autogen houses and trees for the photoreal.

I have been having the blurries problem with quite a few of Lawrie's airports. At first it seemed to be certain texture files e.g. zinc, planter rims, guages that were causing the problem. However, I now think that the blurries result from having the same texture files in a number of locations i.e. in the Static Objects Library located in the Addon Scenery folder, in the FS9 Texture folder, and possibly individual airport Texture folders. I have eliminated as many duplicates as I could find and the problem has largely gone away with one curious exception. For a long time I was getting a bad case of the blurries around Kerikeri airport. Eventually I got rid of these but then found that if I started a flight from the default Kaikohe airport I had the blurries even before takeoff and the situation remains the same since I installed Lawrie's version of Kaikohe. I find that stopping the flight (by hitting the ALT key) and then resuming will usually get rid of the blurries and I can then fly on to Kerikeri with no further problems. I suspect that the problem here is not with Kaikohe but with Kerikeri as it occurs in only one direction i.e. Kaikohe to Kerikeri and not vice verca. Incidentally, I have had no problems with any of the Coromandel airports.

Trev,

Since my "dramas" I have reloaded most of those files you mentioned, as they were earlier thought to be problem......it appears they weren't. From what Lawrie has said I think you are right in that you possibly have a duplication

In my case, removing the fence files mentioned from the particular airport Scenery file, cleared the problem, however when the problem was occuring, it happened after I took off from either
Whitianga or Coromandel airstrips, usually within a short period of time. On good advice from Charl, I set about experimenting with fence files. Fortunately the problem solved itself on number 2, i.e. Whitianga.

It's probably a bit much to hope for, however I notice that Kaikohe has a fence (FCE) file in it's scenery that looks a bit like the one that was causing my problems, perhaps you should try disabling it as a "try on."

Good luck with it, I know how annoying this can be.
