New here - A NZ airfield i've been working on in FS2020 - Whitianga NZWT

Postby Sgt.Frenchfries » Sat Sep 19, 2026 1:43 pm

Hi folks,

I only recently registered here at NZFF, though I tried signing up last year I believe I got caught up in the account activation issue that the site was having...and just discovered the admin emails that were sent I had missed at the time.
Anyway here I am.
I live on Kapiti Coast, although I grew up in the Coromandel. Used to do flight simming back when FS9 was new but stopped as my kids started to come along and life got in the way, mostly missed out on FSX.
I had been aware of the NZFF community and had intended to sign up years ago, but with other priorities it always got put further down the priority list.
Last year I finally decided I'd return after I picked up FS2020 on sale and realized how much the fidelity has improved so invested in pedals and a yoke etc. Which lead to me starting up at my home airfield of NZWT near Whitianga and discovering that the base scenery was horribly out of date and I did not feel available addons at the time did NZWT justice.
I had friends and family who were involved with MBAC and also the raceway behind there and so have many fond childhood memories of the airfield and flying to and from there.
Anyhow, last year I decided I wanted others to experience what NZWT has to offer, which to me is a truly special airfield with a unique history, and so I taught myself how to use the scenery development kit and blender etc to develop my own scenery for the airfield. It is certainly not near the standard set by many of our other amazing developers within NZ, however I am hoping to make this to the best of my ability.

I have been gradually uploading updates to FS.to as I get time to put into improvements, you can see the current state of progress here:

NZWT Mercury Bay Aerodrome

I am aware that another group, Keaskies, are also working on a payware addon of the airfield at present - I in no manner intend to take away from their product or compete with it, as such I probably won't move this to FS2024.
I also am not here to promote my scenery solely.
I want my project to be the best that it can be and was hoping that others in the forum might be able to offer some advice and constructive criticism so I can focus on the next steps to improve.
I'm hoping that once I get this airfield to the stage where I'm happy with it's quality, I will put what I have learned here into producing some other freeware sceneries of NZ airports which there currently have not been addons for since FSX.

Thanks to all who have kept the community going and the work you have put into making NZ a beautiful place to sim within.

Casey

Great stuff Casey, looks fabulous. Drive past that spot most summers on way to/from Whiti and Hahei, never flown out of there IRL but lots of simming in the past.

Welcome to NZFF BTW, sorry about the signup hassle you had

Sgt Frenchfries,

Welcome to NZFF forums and thank you for your amazing contributions to wonderful world of flight simming with your creation of the freeware airfield scenery.

Enjoy your stay in NZFF forums.

Out of curiosity, what made you to choose your screenname Sergeant Frenchfries? What does it mean?

Regards,

I can recall attending several Seafood dinners and dawn patrols at Whitianga back in the late 70's early 80s. Great fun.

Yes this was one reason I thought it will be good to have NZWT in good detail as there is so much traffic going past the airfield, also lots of people flying in from Aux for summer.
Lots of good memories at Hahei - I used to work at the campground there down harsant ave near the beach during summer, before the harsant family sold it.

No worries about the signup thing...I'm actually thankful that you all have kept this space going for so long.

Thanks Aharon, it's good to know that it's received positively.

My handle isn't particularly meaningful - it's just my old Steam username, some friends that I used to play wargames with thought it interesting to change all of our names to make a happy meal. :P
