FS2020 elevation fix?

Postby Kea » Sat Dec 12, 2020 7:54 pm

Might be too early in the piece yet, but does anyone know of any elevation mesh fixes out the for NZ? I haven't fully toured NZ yet but certainly down Milford Sound and Fiordland way it's looking pretty freaky:

We've been promised a DEM tool shortly, and I would expect that soon after we'll have a better mesh for NZ.
Although Milford Sound has been faulty since release, I do think that those spikey bits are new since the last update.

That's hopeful news toprob, will keep watching!
Yeah I've got sdr's NZMF Radar - it's fantastic, but once you venture out of the Sound a bit things are still hit-and-miss (like obvious ridgelines plastered along the side of a smooth hill). I think my original shot was down the Crooked Arm or somewhere around there.
Not a big complaint as obviously it's not a high-traffic area, just concerned me if things were that freaky down there it might be the same in some other more frequented locations.

See the comparison screenshots that show how the Orbx NZ Mesh compares with the default mesh provided by MSFS on the Orbx Forum Introducing NZ Mesh for Microsoft Flight Simulator!

Thank heavens, finally an accurate elevation mesh.

I've been getting really fed up with the Waitakere Hills, Hill Eden and One Tree Hump!

Looks like this will be my first payware purchase for MSFS.

Be good to see a screenshot of those humps and hills, before and after!
I read there is a morphing issue after WU3, does this solve it?

At $20, worth a try. Almost too easy to buy, so from running Central to installed took a couple of minutes. Although I moan a lot about Orbx they have a great purchase system:)
Initial reaction was good, not great. Certainly more pointy bits, but not as many as I was hoping for. Mitre Peak is back! Again, a bit lacking, but still impressive. I guess this is the same 10 metre mesh that Orbx used for FTX NZ, so room for improvement -- this is called 10m by LINZ, but really more like 16m from memory. And without adjusting lake levels, we get the same old thing which you see whenever you improve a mesh without improving the topo data -- lakes with cliffs, mainly, I haven't seen any lake plateaus though, which is a good thing.
Didn't bother with before-after comparisons, because I'm devoting this week to arranging to move up north. May post some screenshots at some stage, but no doubt someone will do better/quicker.
Overall worth buying, due to the low price.
I was pleased to see that it didn't mess up the elevations at any of the airfields I'm working on.

Radar88 ... Thank you!!!

That fixed Milford!
I've been wanting that forever.
I'm a professional pilot who flies tourists into Milford Sound and the scenery until now has been absolutely rubbish!

Hahaha, by rubbish, I mean that I know every stone in the place, so having craters instead of tops of mountains does my head in. It'll still look good, but imagine you're on a sim on your street and they changed all the houses and put in some extra roads ;)

FINALLY, it's fixed :)

I wasn't sure how to get it all working, but your link pointed me in the right direction... thanks.

BTW, I have the Orbx update as well... but the FlightSim.to freeware package is what did the trick.
I haven't tried them both on the same box yet.
Hopefully the Orbx one can tidy up some small things (like vegetation stuff), but the FlightSim.to package is what fixed the terrain.
(that and that GORGEOUS Milford Tower!!!!!)
THAT's what the tower looks like!!!!!

I see today a freeware 10m mesh for all of NZ has been released on flightsim.to as well (double the res of the Orbx payware!)

Cheers, I'd check it out if I wasn't packed up to move. So looking forward to a report!
it was my impression that Orbx used the same data, so would be interesting to see how they compare.

Did some comparison flights around the South Island along the same route/same weather/same aircraft and noticed that the freeware mesh was causing stutters every minute and half or so. Im guessing this is due to the massive filesize in the Community folder (9 point something gigs) vs Orbx's 523mb.

Also noticed some pretty large glitches with the freeware 10m mesh, like these giant flat ravines running east/west through the Kaikouras.

The Milford Sound addon (version 1.9) on flightsim.to has now been updated to be compatible with the freeware 10m mesh too.

I get massive stutters too ... makes flying a tiny bit painful, but great for taking screenshots, LOL!

Yes - NZMF appears largely "fixed", but it's still nowhere near as good as the ORBX+P3Dv5 combination, IMHO. Still a great effort by the author though.

I'll take a look at your Kaikoura locations ...
