Large Custom Regions

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby SeanTK » Sun Oct 06, 2013 6:53 am

An FSX pilot looking for some variety....

I like flying in regions complete with a multitude of quality addon airports and surrounding scenery covering an entire country or a significant portion of a large country. Anything else out there in addition to the below that people know of?

Examples of what I would consider to be fully customized countries or regions (of course new airport addons can be released for these regions at any time):

---New Zealand (VLC, Orbx, RealNZ, Lawrie's airports, and other freeware/payware offerings make this a quality experience wherever you go in the country)

---Australia (Orbx for terrain and airports apparently anywhere on the continent)

---Iceland (Aerosoft Iceland X + Keflavik)

---The Netherlands (NL2000, if you have the hard drive space)

---Quebec Provence, Canada (numerous freeware airports + FlyTampa CYUL Montreal...custom airports basically from Toronto to the Atlantic coast of Quebec province.)

---Orbx regions in Northwest US/Canada

--UK (UK2000 airports, Orbx regions, and other assorted payware/freeware...mostly payware though and can really become expensive quickly)

--Norway (Norway Airports Project, Freeware landclass/mesh, Aerosoft airports. A bit complicated putting it all together, knowing what to remove depending on what other products you have, but comparable cost-wise to a complete NZ).

Yes, that's quite a list....

Ultimately, I like large areas with a variety of airport sizes, fully represented seasons and weather conditions, and a large amount of quality addons that hopefully don't break the bank. Additionally, a healthy AI traffic presence is always a good thing!
Of the above, I primarily fly in New Zealand, and switch to Quebec when I want the more interesting winter weather. (I always use real-world weather)

If anything else, maybe this list can help others here, but if you have your own suggestions, post them!

Well Sean you can always ask for the Christchurch photo-real scenery 1GB , it dose not match VLC so well or you can ask for the Wanganui whoops forgot the 'H' which suits VLC .. glue that with Mikes Wanggas airport and you'd be cooking crossing that Naki to Che's New Plymouth . cool.gif

A bit sparse but there's Aerosofts Antarctica. Isn't Germany reasonably covered? Also Switzerland and France have partly or entirely covered with various packages

There is also the FTX Global Vector Iceland Free Demo. Not sure if it's been released yet.
To quote "To convince more people to try FTX Global + openLC + FTXG VECTOR we have been working very hard on a demo. Not just a small area, but a complete country, and as a bonus it includes beautiful FS Global 2010 Mesh from PILOT'S as well.

The free demo covers all of Iceland. That's right, the whole country with all the FTX Global goodies included. We're going to give this whole FTX Global country with all the three layers plus mesh to you for absolutely FREE!

Oh .. and one last thing .. The Iceland demo includes a Photoreal CityScape Reykjavík, including the business district and docks - completely integrated into the demo and fully hand-annotated.
"

The actual post is here.

I downloaded NL2000 (The Netherlands) last week and it is absolutely brilliant, well worth the effort and hard drive space it takes to get it.

Very nice photoreal coverage, sharp and properly colour balanced combined with accurately placed autogen and many custom landmarks. The airports are superb, all custom designed. You can even have some of the former airbases active which are now closed in the real world. Probably the only major omission is Schiphol but that is being developed for a future version. The package offers its own custom AI traffic to add lots of other activity to the Netherlands' skies as well.

The only real shame is that the terrain is so flat... but that's obviously not the fault of the developers! laugh.gif

NL2000 is big (50Gb for the full install I have here) but modular so you can only get the regions or airports you want if space is at a premium. All the larger files are available as official torrents which helps the downloading process along no end. It's also managed by a really superb installer which keeps everything together and sets it all up automatically.

John Venema also said that he decided not to do an Orbx Netherlands region because NL2000 was so good!
