FSX - NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIAN GROUND TEXTURES

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby toprob » Wed Jun 25, 2008 11:03 am

This has recently appeared in the Avsim and Flightsim libraries, apparently updating NZ and Australian textures and landclass for FSX. However there was a suggestion on the Avsim forum that this isn't quite what people may expect. I haven't had time to have a look at it yet (I'm throttled today angry.gif) but it would make sense to backup your textures before installing this!

I did manage to download it, but didn't install it directly into FSX -- the installer didn't know where my FSX was, anyway.
The textures are all reduced from 1024x1024 to 256x256, which suggests that this is a FS2004 scenery. It also means that I won't be installing it at all.
I just needed to confirm what the Avsim poster said -- that this overwrites your nice high resolution FSX textures with FS2004-style low res textures, and does not offer any sort of backup facility.

Yep I also saw that and downloaded it but was wary of it since Im getting an idea myself just how much work is in modifying landclass textures! (i.e. heaps!)

I installed it to a temporary location and checked out some of the textures and the landclass....not worth the download in my opinion.

The Landclass appears to be a reclassified satellite image which has lots of pixelation....id imagine you would have lots of speckles everywhere.
The textures are very low resolution too.

I wonder...is there not perhaps a large body of would-be FSX'ers that don't have the computing power to run hi-res, for which this would solve their performance issue, while providing access to the other FSX "Features".
Might thus be a good thing...

A couple of points regarding these textures...

The main issue I had with this release was the lack of information -- if they had said that these are much smaller textures, and recommended a backup, then I wouldn't have had a problem.

You can in fact select any ground texture resolution you wish directly from the scenery options -- you don't need to reduce the size of the textures to get better performance, just reduce your settings.

With the recent released of a ground texture to help make the FSX default move away the sands of Iwo Jima , and with a recent install of X had no hesitation to try it out , I don't slew to area's , just clarmly fly in , What better the C130

after leaving RealNZWellington to , the change ... i have also reinstalled The RedBaron Topo over the top

as we travel further many areas could do with a toning down with the GREEN, poor buggers .. went out to mod the sands ... guess may get many WOW to bright .. a Win-win-lost -win lost .

plenty of snow .. sad.gif jeepers now i prefer the sand

Hi Ian,

Where do you get the ground textures download. I'm sick of the baron land.
I also have the FSX with the Geograhx scenery (Mountains Roads and rivers landclass) patched.

Cheers
Derek

I Googled "Charl FS2004" to see if some of my uploads to AVSIM/flightsim had found their way elsewhere.
Hah! What a joke! 6 pages of results, some sites charging for the download![/quote]
Sorry to stray off topic, but I thought I'd do the same, and found my pink skytower textures on four different sites- I never would have thought it would be worthy of copying to another site other than avsim where it only has 320 downloads! unsure.gif
