NZAA Temporary Displaced Threshold

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby ZK-KAG » Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:33 pm

At the moment Auckland Intl has a temporarily displaced threshold on Runway 23L of around 1100m, due to maintenance (ref NZAIP Vol 4 - NZAA AD2 51.1Y). So Ive created an AFCAD to reflect this. The AI doesnt recognise the change but Ive altered the lights and displaced the threshold visually, have a look and tell me what you think as I was contemplating releasing it to Avsim.

there are no extra markings on the runway so no yellow arrows and crosses etc just the displaced tresh-hold papis which are on the south side and right up nearly abeam the tower - there are a set of wingbar threshold lights as well.

the temp displaced threshold is 'day only' so the night lighting can stay as close to normal as MS allows. When we do have a displaced THR that goes overnight - all the edge lights in the closed portion of runway get physically covered up and there is no centerline lighting available for the full runway length, the diplaced thr lighting is the wingbars only and does not extend right across the runway. You are correct in that the approach lighting is disabled.

You could remove virtually ALL blue lighting at AA altogether as there are only about 3 places on the airport that have any and those are only 2 or 3 lights total anyway - this is not just for displaced thr ops but ALL the time.

while I think of it - the runway edge lights are not actually on the edge - when they did the runway upgrade work over the last few years they added strips (about 12.5m) along each side so the lights are well in from the side - or should I say the sides are now well out from the lights!? this was done due to requirements for the wingspan of the A380 and FOD protection.

hope this helps
cheers

Used a bit of creative imagination there, but they are gone now :)

Yep, Taken those out. What I did for the lighting and white line is add a runway, that is real narrow and the length is long enough to cover the real runway. This is so I could get the white line across the r/w.

This is what Ive got in the blue lighting area. If only you could get a floodlight effect on AFCAD...

yep looks a bit better - I will try to find out the actual position of the edge lighting (blues) - there are still a few spurious buildings in there and I dont think (?) that that area is stressed to carry heavies - I think it is B737 and below? will have to check.

Hey Jimmy,

Yeah I wasnt going to upload it as I dont think that many people would want it, but if you want a copy im happy to email you one. Thanks for the comments, Ive put a lot of effort into it, and it fits really nicely with the AKL2005 scenery. I cant wait for the new REALNZ stuff, but its gonna be a whole lotta work for me hehe.

Thanks for that TG, Im trying to make it as realistic as possible so any feedback or tips would be appreciated :)

In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.
