Having a skirt around the web, and saw a recent add-on from Aerosoft for the German Island of Helgoland. Interesting to read that this has a 1 metre mesh. Got my hopes up again that somebody (!!) might bring out a 5m or better mesh for NZ. Looks an interesting add-on, even if it is not NZ, and the screenshots are certainly impressive. Nice to see that they have used a lot of the FSX features like animated seagulls. Again, the balance for/against FSX seems to be leaning towards FSX.

I have no connection with Aerosoft!!! I do know that there is a 5m mesh available for the Rotorua area, but it would be great to get a 5m mesh for the rest of NZ.

On my Christmas wish list already!!

.....This would be a fair way off as there simply isnt the data avaliable for it in NZ, least of all in a common format/standard/owner.

There has been some recent government initiative to become a purchaser/supplier for data of this kind (i.e. NZ wide GIS datasets relevant to a wide range of industry) but the legislation has been in place since the mid 90's.....and nothing has come of it as yet.

Environment Bay of Plenty has just captured a whole heap of terrain data suitable for making 4m contours (say, 2m mesh) but unfortunately for you guys I just handed in my resignation yesterday so there wont be much more scenery coming from this region

There are two methods to capture this high accuracy data:
Lidar (which is what my Rotorua lakes mesh is based on)...it is uber expensive but very accurate/dense

Photogrammetry: Again not cheap but it has advantages (such as only capturing data {breaklines} where they are needed).

Neither option is cheap and it was only the good grace of my managers that I was able to release the Rotorua mesh.
