Will you have FSX by the end of the year?

Yes? No?
Why? Why not?

Yes, and I'll pre-order it too. As for why, just because FS is my favourite computer game and I want to keep up with the new technology. ;)

This is obviously just a personal take, others will have reason to go for it.

No because you can't go backwards with these things.
Going forwards implies:
1. Windows Vista (Next year, and wait for the Service Pack)
2. A dual-core computer with hyperthreading capability (those are 2 different things, oft glossed over in the sales blurb)
3. A massively grunty PCI Express video card

Otherwise you'd be better off with a slick FS9 installation.
My biggest fear is that Microsoft does to FS what it did to CFS between versions 2 and 3.

While I do think that FSX will eventually be the killer version we all use and love, I too am concerned about normal folk's computer systems. It will be 2 years before the majority of us have systems suitable to run FSX at the same settings we can now run FS9. It took me that long to get FS9 up and running well:)
And as far we NZ goes, FS9 has been the version where we have grown up. No longer are we the poor relation compared to other parts of the world, (with the exception of international airports, of course) so we all have to make the decision whether we hold onto FS9 or go to FSX which would mean another round of addons.
A newcomer to simming could go out and buy FS9 now, spend a week on the web (with the help of this forum) downloading/purchasing addons, and they'd have one very impressive NZ to fly around. If they waited until October and bought FSX, they'd have a beautiful sim, but a generic, US-centric New Zealand.
Of course the best bet is to have both. If you want the best sim, go for FSX, if you want the best depiction of NZ, go for FS9.
I admit though that I'm salivating at the thought of some of the features of FSX from a designer's point of view.

As I work at Dick Smith Electronics I'm hoping there'll be a killer staff discount price on it (Deluxe version, of course! :P ), but we definitely have to wait for the New Computer of yore. I really dont think this little 1.8GHz Compaq laptop with 40GB and 700mb will be able to handle this mother!

I promise to get you guys details re NZ RRP as soon as FSX is loaded into our system at work - I spent 15min today talking with a customer about it! Every chance I get I bring up the Microsoft preview screenies on FSPlanet, as well as the pics in our original thread about the demo.

My computer won't run the demo, so I guess I'll be waiting a year or more before I can afford a new computer. :(

howdy,

i originally voted yes, but that was before downloading the demo (on dial-up).

surprisingly, the demo appears to work reasonably well on my 3 year old rig, but it is also painfully obvious that I need to upgrade to a new video card, one that is DirectX 9 (or 10) compliant. and that just ain't gonna happen well until the second quarter of next year. :(

so, if designers keep on cranking out those fs9 add-ons, I'll keep on downloading them. :D

Dorian

Got to say after the memories of the initial slow start in accepting FS9 I will not repeat that same mistake with FSX by7 ordering straight away.

Ok Microsoft know that trying to sell us FSX after FS9 is going to be hard hence they brought out a demo which as far as I know never before in FS have they.
What I have seen with the demo semi impressed me but does not motivate me to charge out for the release until a zillion questions have been answered.

Been saving for a new rig for a while now, but I'm waiting till DX10 vid cards come online then I hope to get a reasonable high end rig. No doubt will still keep FS9 installed as well until everything gets ported over.

So to answer the question, no I won't get it this year as there is no point until I get a new rig and it's probably not until next year until the DX10 stuff comes out :)

I would prefer to wait and see what it is going to be like but I will still pre-order so I have a copy ready and waiting for me incase I have a computer that will run it.

As for all the add-ons I dont really mind I have only really just got into downloading additional helicopters and scenery for fs9 so I will run good ol' fs9 for a while yet but have FSX on standby in case of an emergency.

so consensus seems to be either pre-order and play now, or wait until new technology is available

IMO, i think MS created the FSX demo to lure non-simmers to the game- thus the reason for including the missions in the demo

FSX does look amazing, but since my machine is only capable of FS2002 I'll stick to that for the mean time. I was going to upgrade the PC just after Christmas (I already have FS2004 at home ready to put on it) but will now hold off till late next year once I've seen what Vista (and DX10) is capable of over XP and how FSX performs under vista.

sounds like we need a new poll in January: who had FSX by the end of the year? :ph43r:
