In the moment, I am witnessing an article on "Operation Bodenplatte" of the last attempt by the German Air Force to attack the British and American Air Force in the early hours of 1st January 1945. The matter went badly wrong, because the own German anti-aircraft artillery was not or insufficiently informed. A large number of the own machines were shot down. The bloodletting, especially among the well-trained leaders from the squadron leader to the Geschwader-commanders, could not be remedied.
The RAF and USAAF had lost a lot of aircraft, but were able to make up for their losses within two weeks and lost almost no pilots... On german side a number of proud and well-known "Geschwader" were decimated so badly that they could not recover from it. Only the Geschwader of the "Reichsverteidigungung" 300 and 301 did not fly this mission. There is a good description of the battle, which mentions the names of many pilots who have not returned. A larger number are still missing to this day. Interesting for me was that most of the units of the German Luftwaffe typical aircraft with piston engines flew Fw 190A-8 and A-9, Fw 190F-9 and the "long-nosed Focke Wulf Fw 190D-9 ... Messerschmitt Bf 109G-10, G-14 and G-16 and the "Kurfürst" Bf-109K-4 the latest version of the Bf 109. There was almost no trace of the Me 262, some machines of the KG J 51 were probably there, but the novotny command was already disbanded and the Jagdgeschwader 7 was not yet operational and not involved in the operation. The "Jagdverband 44" was formed even later. Thus, many claims about the strategic importance of the Me 262 remain a fairy tale...

Next projects are Tobruk in 1942 and Normandy in 1944. The latter is not yet finished, but it will certainly be interesting. The planes are already there, but the maps are still missing.
