Having just got the Iron Cross Edition (ICE) of said sim, and still a rank FNG, I am learning fast that the learning curve is high on this game! Lots of fun and a good complimentary activity to flying round the world in FSX or sticking it to Jap shipping in SH4. Aaanyway, a few screens...

Nice shiny Fokker D.VII...

Outbound D.VII...

Lining up for a gun run on some enemy artillery. None of these planes make particularly stable gun platforms, and they become even more unstable with some bad guys in the sights for some reason... huh.gif

D.VII from the drivers seat. All the pits are nicely modelled, but not clickable unfortunately

My pick for a strafer, the most stable platform so far, the venerable SE.5A

Unfortunately I decided to take on an Albatross V which quickly got into my OODA loop and removed some of my fabric (plane parts, as well as some clothing and body parts apparently...) ohmy.gif

I managed to do the runner, because the SE.5A outstrips most of the opposition in a flat sprint, even with some extra parasitic drag going on, however I began to run out of steam, engine not happy...

I'm not happy either apparently (don't worry, it's only fake blood, no pixels were harmed in the making of this gallery) biggrin.gif

My run ended when I conked out and had to park the kite in a feild, damn bad show, what! surrender.gif

I decided revenge was in order so the big guns came out. First up the ungainly (I'm being nice here all things being equal...) Handley Page 0-400

I'm pretty convinced that the greatest risk faced by the crews of these big box kites was the take-off. Underpowered, serious yaw, non-existent climb, etc etc. I bet the crews would have had white knuckles long before they crossed enemy lines...
This was a 'payware' addon, also got a Gotha as well for the same price (see below). Not bad for only US$8 each with functional crew stations, rudimentary bombsight etc.

This thing was a real headache to fly as well.needs a lot of big wide open spaces to get airborned fully bombed up. The Gotha was a bit more of a battle veteran that the 0-400 however...

Final aircraft I will cover tonight is the Airco DH2, a pusher prop with a 'blip switch' which is well modelled in the sim and makes for some amusing flying. That definately contributed to the wreckage whilst trying to strafe a convoy. Amazingly I survived the crash with the truck, although a bit bloodied. I'm getting well used to that in this game winkyy.gif Great damage modelling overall

Wow great stuff! The modelling looks fantastic. Looks some what brighter than FSX. The SE-5A and Fokker VII are my favourite WW1 fighters along with the Brisfit. Those biggies must be a handful to fly even if aren't been shot at. Whats the FPS like and what aircraft does it come with?

RoF...completely forgot about that thing! Is it still subscription based? I remember that and having to be connected to the net 24/7 for it to work were a big turn away point for me.

Nice shots.

Umm, not sure if it needs to be connected to the net everytime you want to play. You have an 'offline' option, and I had to use it on Friday night because I couldn't log into the server. I guess it had crashed due to the Easter Sale....I was playing it ok as a standalone then. Obviously it affects the multiplay options, which from what I can see, the game is weighted towards. Still learning the ropes at the moment, so no expert, but the ROF ICE version cost US$30 which is a lot cheaper than most payware FSX planes, so that is definately a thumbup1.gif IMHO.

The interface is still a lot like IL2FB, so not a lot of the realism you get with clickable VC's in FSX. Other than that, having just seen some of the featured planes up close and personal at Omaka, it's going to be a bit of fun for a while! biggrin.gif

Ian, to answer your previous re killing you off, I somehow doubt that!!! I have failed to mention that the last few times I flew against an opponent in multiplay, I met the same fate as the majority of new pilots in WW1 i.e. 20 minuters laugh.gif

Paul, re your query on frames, I'm not sure exactly what they are running out at, however I have not had any slideshows yet, and my settings are almost maxed out. that included a multiplay with about 15 others. My system specs below, I am not overclocking either my CPU or GPU, so that is a good indicator that it should run well on most mid-to-high FSX machines

One of the updates introduced an "offline" mode - so you dont need to be online whilst playing. Your scores are saved online so they don't get updated till you go online again, and obviously you need to be online to download newly purchased aircraft or to for multiplayer.

Not sure what you mean by "subscription based" though - there's never been any kind of ongoing cost for RoF. You buy it and you play. End of story, unless you choose to purchase additional aircraft, which cost bugger all compared to FS9/FSX addons.

I second the 'bugger all' statement. Just added the D7F to the hangar for the grand total of US$2.99, and have improved my capacity to take the opposition out of circulation.

The following sequence was a simple activity with single regenerating enemy AI fighters protecting their home turf. With the D7F against the Allies finest (which included 2 x Camels, a Spad 13 and a couple of SE5A as the top contenders, I was able to return to base with empty guns and 6 flaming wrecks on the ground. My highlight was taking a wing off a SE5A that had followed me back to my base with only 30 rounds left in 1 gun pirate.gif My damage: a collision with a part of his wing which damaged mine. biggrin.gif Very similar paint scheme to the Omaka one BTW (Jasta 4) winkyy.gif

Another couple of 'paywares' I have yet to master....

Gotha V.The Allies are all over me on this one, and that after I had written off my first one on take-off, quite a handful I must say

Uh-oh! ohmy.gif

sad.gif Sorry team, let the side down there!

Probably why the RAF worked out in the next war early on that night ops are the way to go!

Apologies for the rough edits with the nomenclature such as pause signs and aircraft tags etc, still only a couple of hours into this new sim. DISCLAIMER: FSX is still very much a part of my sim experience!!!!!

Yup, been watching that with baited breath mate. Think it'll be a goodie coming from Aerosoft. I don't mind if the sim is a bit narrow in the scope, as long as it is realistic. Thats what attracted me to ROF. Hope they don't take too long to get it out drool.gif
