RealNZ Auckland Night texture problem

The official REAL NZ support forum

Hey guys,

My first post here, but I've been reading through all your helpful advice and interesting addons for a while.

I have an annoying problem with Rob's RealNZ Auckland scenery and I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. I trawled through the forum backlog to see if I could find an answer, but no luck.

Basically, In the day time all the scenery objects (skytower, asb tower ect....) are fine, no problems. But towards dusk, or at dawn and at night autogen scenery and clouds can be seen through Robs scenery. It makes them look sort of transparent. Its really annoying!

Anyway, does anyone else have/had this problem?

Hope you can help

Thanks, Simon

(p.s. I have been trying to upload some screenshots to imageshack and it is being the most annoying %&^$*# ever...but hopefully tomorrow)

Hi ... and *welcome* cool.gif

My default location is NZAA ... so I could take a few trips around dusk. Is this FS9 or FSX? (I have FSX).

Cant say ive ever noticed that in fs2004 or FSX but then i didnt do many flights in FSX at that time of day night ,you could just be noticing the day to night textures blend when they are changing ,what are they like after this time at night or darker at least ..
does it last very long at all 5min,?
i see your prefer sim is FSX in your profile so this could be just the way FSX is handling the day to night blend ,seeing the Auckland you have will be made for 2004 sim it will just be the way it handles the swapping of the textures as there are choices with FSX textures but not with the way they where done in fs9 ,so id expect this is just something that cant be helped from porting over from the two platforms..

guess unsure.gif

Thanks for your quick responces people! smile.gif

I run the scenery on FSX, really should of mentioned that to begin with. Unfortunately it doesn't last for just 5mins (if it did I would probably just ignore it)

It seems to be a problem with the night textures. It starts at dusk (sort of when the starts first come out), then goes all the way through the night.

I've managed to upload some images:

Skytower Dusk 1

Skytower Dusk 2

Downtown Dusk

Downtown Night

Auckland Day time (textures working fine)

Hope these work!

I think this is because of the way in which FSX handles the alpha -- in FS2004, day and night textures had their own alpha channels, but in FSX both use the daytime alpha. In this case, I think the buildings use an alpha for reflections during the day. Since with FSX the same alpha is used at night, it becomes transparency. You could remove the alpha from these textures and see if it helps.
Are you up-to-date with FSX service patches?

Remove the alpha eh? Well I could give that a go, but you would have to tell me how I go about that.

Well I have FSX SP1, I installed Acceleration, but it messed up my CLS A340/30 windscreens in rain, so I uninstalled it. I guess I could reinstall it (as my heavies are all in the hanger at the moment smile.gif ).

But if you don't mind telling me how to take away the alpha from the textures I could give that a try first.

As always thanks for your help!

If you haven't done anything like this before, then even getting the tools set up would be a job in itself. Maybe someone else can have a go at this? I just don't have the time at the moment (I'm on a deadline for Wanaka/Tekapo for FSX), and I don't have the FS2004 Auckland City installed in FSX -- just the new beta...

Oh I see, well I'll try installing Acceleration! Who knows!

If not, it doesn't matter too much, it's not too detrimental to the whole Auckland experience (somedays I wish the highrise buildings in Auckland WERE transparent winkyy.gif )

Hmmm ... I hate to say this ... but it looks like something may be "porked" on your system.

I've cycled through all the times from late afternoon to nigh on midnight and can't reproduce what you see.

I have FSX (fully patched) and FSX Acceleration - plus Rob's AKL scenery (placed top in the sceneries order this week). All my GFX settings are maxed right out when I do sight-seeing. Slide show stuff but looks pretty winkyy.gif

Did you install Rob's exception .bgl for AKL?

Incidentally - Rob (since you're reading this) - when I enable the Red Baron NZ Topo, I get the default bridges etc. showing for AKL. I thought Topo didn't have anything to do with objects <?>.

NZ Topo = Roads and rivers.....it also adds power lines as well as other things I think

This is something I have on my list to solve for Auckland City for FSX -- the Topo scenery adds a lot of bridges, which I would think would be easy enough to exclude, but it also adds a 'road' under the Harbour Bridge, which is more difficult to remove.

Great!!! If I see you over Birkenhead, I'll wave winkyy.gif

Rob - thanks for that and - yes - you're right about that road. Same thing happens to the North Harbour bridge. Good to hear you're still working on AKL for FSX. Will that include Whenuapai? I really miss the FS2004 scenery for that.
