This has been reported by a few people, sorry I've taken so long to come up with a fix.
I think I can reproduce this, so I may be onto a solution. It may be the result of a faulty installation. This is likely if you are a Real NZ subscriber, as the initial shipment of CDs was not picking up the correct FS location if it was changed from the default location.
If this applies to you, and you are getting crashes, then you should try this:
Locate a file called FL994460.bgl. This is located in the Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\Ocen\scenery folder.
If you cannot find it, then your installation worked ok. If you can find it:
Rename it to FL994460.GVF. (just change the extension to .GVF)
Let me know if this helps.
The problem may be caused by duplicated flattens for the lower half of the North Island. Renaming this file effectively disables it, leaving only the one set of flattens for this area.
This would also explain why deactivating -- or even deleting -- Real NZ Wellington doesn't fix the problem, as the offending file will still be duplicated in the Scenery\Ocen\scenery folder.

toprob wrote:Problem solved!!!!
After weeks of frustration with FS9 crashes to the terrain dll error I discovered what the problem was. I noticed after a crash that the O&O defrag icon was in the task bar. I had this configured to start automatically without regard to CPU demand. The start of this program killed FS9 with a faulting Terrain dll.file. I have since used FS Autostart before running FS and have had no further problems.
Cheers,
Richard

Richard posted this on the AVSIM forum. I'm glad he's solved this, it was a strange one. Thanks Richard.

There are two 'non-standard' features with Wellington. First, there's the Actigate module, which activates the gates. First try disabling this (or removing it completely) as it may conflict with another module or scenery (or aircraft) which uses the same scenery ariables.
Secondly, there's the issue with the flattens which has been spelt out above.
If this doesn't help, then you can try re-activating the default flatten and deactivating mine. To do this (at the same location as the previous fix):
Rename FL994460.GVF to FL994460.bgl
Rename GVF994460.bgl to GVF994460.bak.

Remember, though, that the other difference with Wellington is that it is a complex scenery, and will tax some systems. If they are prone to heating, you'll notice it more around Wellington. If they have unstable RAM, you'll notice it more around Wellington.
If they have resource conflicts, you'll notice it more around Wellington. Try turning down your graphic settings a little. It would be nice to run full-steam with all the settings turned up high, but it just won't work if your system can't cope.

another idea bozza72 , my fix was to by new PC everytime i had unanswer'd crash .. , heres a little fix that may work , start a flight at NZPM or Ohakea , save as default . then start from anyone off those airports and fly to Welly . ..... NOT REALLY A REAL FIX , but found if u have a LOT off files loaded it seems to work . by the way when landed there save that as your default NZWN flight ,you then can fly anywhere after that ... MAYBE to Robins new MALBOURGH :)

Robs going to think Jezzzzzz Ian :D  ... but with both 9 and X runnin get a lotta conflict , but :) :) seems to work .

just a thought ,you say you have a new laptop ,after you try the above fixes that should fix the problems you are having .
just so you know there are some brands of laptops with ati cards that just dont cut the mustard,we have replace three of them for another brand cheaper one actully because it was just not running our demos that are just as frame hungry than the sim
even with duo and 4gig ram and lastest cards etc the two models we had before just cr@p themselfs
ill find out what models if the fixs dont work above
