Easy, just leave the bikinis out.![]()
Looking good alright, can't wait to get myself a new computer so I can make the most of all of this fantastic scenery that you guys are clever enough to create!

The runway texture in the July 13 screenshots looks heaps better, very realistic.

Although it is an accepted term in flightsim, and I call it that, my scenery isn't 'photoreal' in the real sense of the word, it is photographic. Photoreal implies making an image to appear photographic, which is the way the default textures are made. Photographic replaces photoreal textures with an actual photograph of the scenery area.
Normally aerial images are taken in the height of summer, and there is usually no other choice anyway, there's only one aerial image available for any particular area. So the aerial is always going to be summery -- you can adjust it a bit of course, but you can't rebuild it. Well, some people do, but you end up with an overly bright repainted unnatural look.
The problem really is the lack of real colour information in the aerial image -- even if the aerial mapper starts with a set of beautiful photos equivalent to 40 bits (which they don't very often), these need to be colour-matched to thousands of other images, so they have to discard half the real colour which reduces the apparent colour depth to probably less that 20 bits. So any further adjustment will only reduce it further, which damages it further and moves it further away from reality.
With Nelson, I started with a great 50 cm image of the city, and a very 'burnt' 12 cm image of the airport, which needed to be colour-matched to the larger image. I needed to take real care that this wasn't over-done, otherwise it just starts to look bad.
As I said, some people do it, but it still means that only one season looks natural, the rest don't, while it increases the distribution size hugely.
If I could source a winter aerial image, I'd love to use that, but they just don't exist here in NZ.Last edited by toprob on Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:31 am, edited 1 time in total.

I work on the ramp in Nelson and looking at those screen shots makes me feel at work.
...
Sorry about that:)
I do need to get back to Nelson for a few touch-up photos, so there's nothing I really need at the moment. The awkward bits are the rescue centre and test bay, as they don't like people wandering around there...

No worries. Let me know when you are coming and I will arrange Airside access for you. I will talk to the airport manager and escort you or get you out there with the airport Fire service.
