It's Fire Season!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well Jonno, Big Al and Munt survived the winter at the Research Stations thanks to the efforts of NZFF flying in fresh supplies.

The Department of Twig and Tweet were so happy with their work they decided to keep the boys on for the Summer. This time we see our heroes on firewatch duties based at various locations south of Milford Sound(NZMS).

It has been a very hot, dry year and the possibilty of forest fires breaking out is extremely high. In fact one has already broken out down the valley from Outpost 8 where fire crews are being assembled to contain the situation.

Temporary airstrips have been placed at strategic locations around the park so that fire parties can monitor developements and watch for further trouble.

It is time to deliver supplies to the various outposts(Munt has already drunk the first two dozen stubbies so things are getting desperate).

Given their performance in fulfilling the last contract the Department of T & T has once again employed the services of NZFF. NZMS airfield is being used as a central distribution point. Start from here.

As well as making the rounds delivering the supplies you may also be called upon to take Controllers from Outpost 8 to check on the progress being made containing the blaze down the valley. If you have a suitable aircraft you may assist with extinguishing the fire.

You may use GPS and/or a map to navigate to each location.

Outpost Co-ordinates -

Outpost 5(NZO5) - S44* 42.55', E167* 43.08' Alt 1490m
Outpost 6(NZO6) - S44* 47.85', E167* 29.19' Alt 1020m
Outpost 7(NZO7) - S44* 53.96', E167* 32.36' Alt 882m
Outpost 8(NZO8) - S44* 58.81', E167* 37.25' Alt 741m
Outpost 9(NZO9) - S44* 46.78', E167* 44.24' Alt 1342m
Fire - S44* 58.72', E167* 40.52'

A map has been included with the download file.

The individual locations are listed under Southern Alps/New Zealand in the Sim menu.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following 2 EZ Scenery libraries are required. If you did the SAR Mission or Southern Alps Re supply Mission a couple of weeks back you should already have them.

OK here ya go. Bit more info.

Start Time "“ 2000hrs

Aircraft - Start with any default type. (Piper, Cessna or 206b will be ideal) Then change to an aircraft of your choice if you wish. But remember these are bush strips.

Season - Your choice but Summer is in keeping with the spirit of the mission.

Weather - Again your choice - but bushfires are unlikely if it's snowing.

General -
1. The inland approach to Outpost5 is through a pretty tight saddle, so watch the speed.
2. The easiest way into Outpost8 is to do the canyon run past the fire to the head of the valley.
3. For an interesting approach to Outpost9 use the seaward side and kick the tail around.
4. Please remember to cap your framerate at 25fps.

The Mission file will be posted tomorrow.

Hope to see you there.

Inspire Server 203.114.130.15
Teamspeak is preferable though of course the Chatbox is fine.

So what does this involve? Is it hard, or is it just point to point flying with a GPS? I can't do much other than that biggrin.gif Unless i just tag along in a Maule..

Yep VAC - as Matt says that's pretty much all there is too it. We try to keep things fairly informal.

The Missions I've done are just there to give some purpose for the flights rather than nobody knowing what each other is up too.

The challenge is in finding each location and managing to land at each one. Some of these are pretty short and the location may also provide a challenge in some cases.

I generally use GPS. But Point to Point is not always the fun way to get somewhere. It may be better to follow a valley and pop through a saddle. In this mission Milford Sound to Outpost5 is like that.

Failing that we could just take the mickey out of Jimmy trying to land a 737 on a 280m piece of real estate. tongue.gif

Everybody is welcome no matter what their skill level.

Each Friday and Saturday. Normally we're around from 8.00pm.

I've had RW things on the last couple of weeks so haven't made it along. But should be there this week hopefully.

Craig normally posts a reminder on Thursdays for the Friday flights. Don't know what if anything is planned for this weeks. Suggestions welcome.

I've been a bit strapped for time lately but hope to start building another mission soon. Maybe another SAR one.

Please come and join in.

I was just thinking we should have an air race or something for the next mission- maybe starting over at Great Barrier Auckland, touch-and-go waypoint stop at NZRV then first under the Auckland Harbour bridge wins...?

Hah I remember doing that at a mates.. He had two comps linked via internet cable so we had our own internet server. We took off from YSSY, flew under the bridge and went back and landed. It was fine until we tried it in Bae 146's.. We should do that some time. Make the route nice and short, so you can do it more than once biggrin.gif
