Just a little reminder. Tomorrow there will be full ATC on NZAA (IVAO) from 7:30pm till about 9. There is a flight coming in from YBBN (leaving YBBN at 6pm NZST) so that would be ideal to experience ATC all the way.

We will have Auckland Delivery, Ground, Tower, Approach, Centre, and Oceanic Control online :D . And the aussies will roll out something very similar to this on their side ;) .

Hi

Some of you may have seen my first experiance with online atc last night at this event?
im so embarresd cause that is not how I fly at all.
So that you all don't think im a hopeless pilot i thort id explain what went wrong lol:
I contacted nzaa twr and the controller was comeing threw very badly, i could hadly understand what he said, I understood hi asking my intetions so I said im to land at nzaa, he then told me to descend to 2000 gave me the QNH and said something else i couldn't understand. The first thing to go wrong was that in a hurry to set my altimiter (something i should have already done but was busy and forgot) so i quickly pressed "B" instead of manuly dialing it in, i was not aware that i had actuly typed a b into the ivap box :o So i had a incorectly set alt and no direction victors, the tower repeated that he wants me to fly on my current path over the aerodrome, thats when the stutters began from all the 3d objects down at NZAA, my mic then fell of my desk and I was typeing to acknolage the instctions I had so my hands were to busy to hold the stick and thats where it all started.

At this point i realised I had fallen below 2000 (well thats what my altimiter said) when I hadn't had my hand on the stick because i was holding the mic or typeing and trying to set my heading bug so i could engage the ap. Then the twr told me i was to DESCEND to 2000 ,suddenly i realised that my baro was still on the previous setting! I quickly changd it and saw i had 700ft to descend. In a panic I pulled the thortle to idle and descend rather quickly, i of course over shoot 2000 as i was trying to comminicate with the tower again, i then had to climb back up a bit and i forgot my throttle was on idle so the airspeed bleeded of very quickly, My left wing dipped and i pressed that horrible "y" key . oops  it got me back to cruse speed in seconds but was very embarasing.
The stuters stoped and I trimed the stabilizers and continued on course at 2000.

So there was realy a large amount of things to cause that very not good moment, the altimiter setting is what started it all, I think i was just realy busy and my panel was packed full and i coulnd't hear atc and typeing just made it impossible to keep good control. I hope you understand now and I think ill do much better next time now that I know how all the software works.

Thanks for reading :)
James

hehe Jimmy, it's all good mate. I was in the A320 (ANZ093) that was waiting at 23L to depart whilst this rogue GA pilot buzzed the airport, with no-one knowing what he was doing :D

It wasn't till I got out of AA's control area and switched to NZ CTR (Alex) that he said the plane at AA was you.

The ATC wasn't easy to hear though, his accent was really strong and his voice was rather muffled. I had to ask him to repeat a few instructions.

Well done for getting online though mate!

yea i heard you talking to the tower i think. Twr said I have no intentions???? I got a bit annoyed at that point because i had already told him the other two times he asked.

I felt a bit rude haveing to ask him to repeat so many times, when my mic fell of the desk i asked for text for that reason and so I could understand him , it was typeing that was hard to do while flying aswell thow. ahh ill get used to it soon

Yea well it wasn't too bad, about 10 aircraft did the flight, all arriving within about 10-15mins giving our approach controller a nice work out. And we had James keeping tower on its toes  . Overall not a bad evening, but room for improvement. Next leg is NZAA-NWWW on the 12/13th of August, but I'll keep you posted ;) .
