Sunday Night Ops
Aid for Christchurch
Sunday 27th February 2011 1200-0000 NZDT / 1000-2200 AEDT / 2300-1100 UTC

At 12:51pm on Tuesday afternoon, Christchurch was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. This followed on from a major quake that hit the region last September, but while this week's event was smaller in size than 2010, the damage and loss of life has been far far greater.

By way of showing our support for the people of Christchurch, VATNZ will be operating an event this Sunday allowing pilots the world over to fly much needed supplies and personnel between Auckland (NZAA) and the quake-hit Christchurch (NZCH).

In addition, we encourage pilots and controllers who are taking part to seek sponsorship from friends and family to help drive donations to Christchurch quake relief appeals. Ask them to pledge a few dollars per flight or hour of controlling, and then donate directly to one of the appeals that has been established to help the people of the Garden City in their hour of need.

Donations for the Christchurch 2011 Earthquake Appeal can be made via the New Zealand Red Cross website.

Auckland and Christchurch can accomodate aircraft up to an A380 so bring the biggest aircraft you have in your hangar and carry as many supplies and personnel as possible.

The event will be this week's SNO. The previously scheduled "Hamilton Norfolk Hop" event will be postponed until later in the year.

Flight Routes

Auckland to Christchurch

  • AACH3 - AA H384 NP H252 NS V288 YW H309 CH

Christchurch to Auckland

  • CHAA1 - CH V175 OR H277 AA

Gary , very little you can do about it , many say anymore and they are out of the city and many already gone , i appear to be in the safer area , little or no damage except the church down the road , as you head east into town along Riccarton Rd , it gradually starts show signs .
