VFR Group Flight around Southland/Otago - 12 February 2023

Postby ZK-DWF » Mon Feb 06, 2023 8:51 am

Here's an invitation to join our very informal group for the first VFR flight of 2023, on the evening of 12 February 2023 (Sunday) taking off at 7.30pm (NZDT).

Departing from Te Anau/Manpouri (NZTO).
We head south visiting Centre Bush (NZCB), Invercargill (NZNV) and Ryans Creek (NZRC) on Stewart Island.

Then we head north to Gore (NZGC) and Balclutha (NZBA).
Then ending the flight at Dunedin (NZDN).

This trip should take about over one and a half hours.

Plane of choice this time is the Cessna 172, or similar.

Flying will be in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
Server is South East Asia.
Time set is 1200 hours (noon NZT).
Weather is optional.
Add-on scenery of your choice.

Using Discord 'Long White Cloud' Server for voice traffic. Please try and have voice available. It makes its easier for everyone to know what's going on.

See you there, Dave (ZKDWF)

The flight plan is here

We have guests so my 'office' is seconding as a temp bedroom for my daughter, but I'll see if I can make it, at least to the early parts of the flight, but I could get kicked out at bed time! :)

Thanks so much for organising this Dave and cheers for the company also Jeff and zkiwi. Was a great route with some fun touch-n-go action along the way, including some formation-landing at one point

Here we are parked up at the end of the flight, missing one machine here too as were 4 of us in all, along w a few randoms who seemed to be in the vicinity.

First time MSFS multi-player experience for me, I was such a noob and really need to get my head around the MSFS config and options a bit more. Thoroughly enjoyed it and defo recommend others to give it a crack. Just make sure you turn up nice and early for any pointers before the flight kicks off and not fashionably late like I did :D

EDIT - I actually cheated here and flicked the time back a few hours so I could actually SEE the runway at Gore as we arrived there after sunset, the other guys must be eating more carrots than me

Was a good flight. We usually set the time to midday since we want to see stuff (and land, of course!) :)
Thanks for the company.
Hopefully see you all, and more, next time.

Yeah, good flight, and I learnt a few new things during the discussion.
Nice to have a bigger group tonight.
We ran out of time, and only made it as far as Gore.
Next up, is flying around the Mt Cook area.

Here's the Volanta track ...

and a screenshot on our way over to Stewart Island....

I did fully intend to join the flight, and I'd already been flying in the area beforehand, but shortly before the start time my family started up the barbeque:) This was a celebration for my ex-wife's husband, who managed to find a job here in Wellington. Definitely worth celebrating, if it gets them closer to finding their own place!
I'd be keen for a group flight following WU12.
