This week we are doing return flights between Napier and Christchurch. This pair of flights takes in some spectacular scenery along the east coast of both islands and through the Cook Strait region.
The southbound leg travels through another less-frequently visited part of VATNZ airspace, overflying the Wairarapa, east of Wellington.
The northward leg passes west of Wellington through the Kapiti coast before crossing the Tararuas for the descent into Hawkes Bay.
Both legs skirt the east coast of the upper South Island, affording stunning views of the Kaikoura Ranges and the rugged mountains beyond.
Total round trip time should be just over two hours, depending upon choice of aircraft. Air New Zealand flies this route with the ATR-72, but feel free to bring any prop or small jet.
