FSRecorder experimental renderer

A forum to share your FS video clips and movies

Has anyone used this? I've finally got around to trying FSRecorder, and it has some amazing features. Before I go the FRAPs route to record, I'd like to know whether the renderer works as intended, since it is an 'alpha' release.
An example video would help, 'cause then I could move this to the Video subforum:)

Which version of FSR is this? I thought I was pretty up-to-date! I struggled with FRAPS, trying to record past the 4Gb barrier (when I was trying to capture a 10min unedited FSR recording in hi-res) ... so bought Playclaw as well, which I think is *much* better.

It's this thing here.

It's not on the download page, as it mentions, as this is not yet at beta stage.

It works by controlling the time in FSX, so that you get a steady FPS, even if it takes three times that long to render:) I finally gave in and installed it (I never install alphas...) and it seems to work well. It switches FSX to window mode and resizes it to match the video size. My first test recording gave a nice smooth 3 minute video, using three recorded aircraft plus a POV slew. However partway through I got a G-force black-out, then a red-out.
There are some gotchas, such as the fact that you can only render a recorded flight, you can't fly in real time. And no sound, of course, because of the variable time frame. They do suggest that you record the sound separately by replaying the flight as normal.

Thanks for that, Robin ... grabbing now. I'll tell you how I get on! I'll also sign up to the FSR forums so I can give feedback.

UPDATE: Impressive indeed! Quite a smooth recording of the Wanaka Spit display I've been playing with. I just need to set up hotkeys so I can start a FSR recording and render without menus appearing everywhere!

Incidentally, I think it *does* record in real time. I thought I was rendering a recording, but the recording never started, so I fooled about in real-time. I rendered it all the same.

Ok, I've shifted this here now because I have a video...

Although my first video here is a bit rough (at one point I nearly get run over by a Cessna, and there are a couple of extra AI which weren't meant to be there), it does show a couple of really great features:

  • A guaranteed frame rate of 24, no matter what the system;
  • A proper 720p resolution (1280x720);
  • No junk on the screen;
  • It's free!

Here's a link rather than embedded, as this is a 720p video:

A bit rough???? Looks *amazing* ... very crisp, too. I don't think you get run over - more like cut in two laugh.gif. Was that using our little ORBX friend BOB - or just a roving camera?

I've never *edited* movie clips before (or added sound) ,.. what's the best app for that? Freeware/paid? I have Win7 x64 ... not sure whether the old MS Moviemaker will do it.

Adam did you have success at recording with PlayClaw (Demo version), I can get it to record with most games but not with FSX, it just sits there like some dumb smuck.
Wont buy it till I can get it working with FSX.

No problems at all. I think I tried the demo version quickly (can't even remember) then bought it immediately. Did you try reconfiguring the "start" key? Maybe it was clashing with a default FSX key ...

mmm ok, all F keys are clear on my config, in fact I have pretty much a clear keyboard as all functions go through toggle and momentary switches with FSIUPC and WideFS.
I dont even see the overlay that shows in other games... oh well not to worry.

I maybe should have mentioned that although I've used mostly free tools here, the 'camera' is via EZdok, which is payware.

Yes, as you can see I tried to reproduce our visit to Ash, including the bit where we ran out onto the airfield, nearly got run over by a cessna, then got in the car and chased the sob with a cardboard shotgun...
Ah, good times.

I've only had a quick look at world cameras, they seem to work as intended, although they are quite clunky. What sort of problem do you have?

I've been playing around with the quality settings, and I'm beginning to love this renderer. My one and only test was too good to throw away, so I've Tubed it...
Another link to the HD version, of course...

Forest Field

PS. To the person who asked why I have one music video in my Youtube channel Favourites, that's just there to remind my kids what I want played at my funeral:)

Playclaw: Hard for me to say, as I only had the demo on for long enough to convince me to buy it (ie. minutes) ... but I'm wondering whether you're seeing the same config screen as I am (if at all).

You should be able to change whether the overlay displays and the hotkeys (which by default are *not* f-keys ... they're PrtScrn or other obscure keys). You should also be able to set the destination directory. As Playclaw writes as you go, it's hard to know that it's actually working. Who knows, you may have a whole pile of movies on your HD somewhere laugh.gif.

All I can say is take another look at the config screen ... see if it reveals any mysteries. I certainly haven't been disappointed - as it records the sound as well, which the new FS Recorder beta doesn't.

@Rob .. I've signed up to the FSR forum - as I think it's an amazing piece of work and I'd like to help out with bug reports or just encouragement.

@kcqb: **Very impressive***!!! Is that all multiple records in FSR then a render at the end? Loved the delayed split turn to the left. I suspect my formation would be *all over the place* sad.gif

When I played with the edit it reminded me how putting any soundtrack totally changes the movie (incredible). The only problem is that it's just too tempting ... and too easy to fall foul of the Youtube copyright restrictions (which I happen to think are correct/appropriate).
