There is also something else called 'Freetrack' which ive used sucessfully- Uses a IR LED and a webcam plus some free software.....worked fine

I started off using 4 LED's for 6 degrees of Freedom but just reverted to one for up/down/left/right....much easier to caliberate and setup

Oh yeah? I was going to do that once. Where did you get you're LCD's from? Also did you use a resistor? I think thats what stopped that project, not knowing what kind of resistor to get.

Got mine from Dick Smith but dont get their ones (or maybe just to test)- The IR LEDs they sell have a very narrow beam. You can get Seimens ones with a much broader beam which is important for this application as you need the beam to be picked up when you turn your head.

Resistor I used....hmm cant remember but there are full instructions on the Free track website. I cut off the USB cable from a joystick that was stuffed which provides 5v DC. The LED was mounted onto my mic/headphones on a bit of core flute about 10cm in front of the head band (greater distance = greater deflection so when I remake it ill put it out at maybe 15cm)

Then you just need a webcam and a piece of undeveloped film to use as an IR filter, a few bits of random software and the FreeTrack Software.

Yeah I got the Eye toy web cam to go with the PC and have the software. The new version means you don't need to have it bypass that PP-joy or whatever, and integrates with FSUPIC. Watching some videos about how someone converted a bike light to a 3 clip tracking devise, so might do that sooner or later.
