I read another post on some other flightsim forums about the size of your flightsim folder on your harddrive.

Mine was originally over 27GB in size untill I did a recent re-install.

How big are other members fs folders?

I have a dedicated 40 gig drive just for FS, and I have 85 megs left. So that means I've got 39.whatever gigs of FS.

Edited 21 May: Local electronics store was having a sale, so I had to go out and get me some good stuff. New 200mb external drive (Maxtor), plus new 1 Gig memory and 256mb vid card. So the FS folder size is growing again... I'm catching up to that 135 gig number.

About 12GB, mostly terrain mesh and air traffic. I've only got 2GB left in that drive now, but fortunately I'm upgrading my machine in about a month, and one of those upgrades is going to be to a 300GB hard drive. :)

Fresh install of windows and FS, with some meshes, no add on planes installed yet, topo, some airports and AS, and its 4.58 gig.

I blame Auckland for most of that...

had over 85+gb but now to improve loading etc down to just the basic needs,
as if there are other scenery/aircraft that i dont work with much i just put them to disc or i have other puters loaded up with them anyway ,
So just a simple network thing to load them in ....all aircraft are on dvd hangers as i call them and are quick and easyier to me to load up better than making yet another coffee and looking at the screen lol
all my fs 2002 is now out dated about 50 odd discs freeware /payware and fs9 is shared between two pc of about dedicated 160gb all up but while playing maybe 6gb or so :D

jIust thought I would revisit this topic after installing REAL NZ Wellington and lots of Sicily photoreal.

As of 04/12/06:

And all that will need to be backed up soon as I'm getting a new system. Is it possible to simply copy my main Flight Simulator 9 folder and the Documents and Settings/Application Files/Microsoft/Fs9 folder onto a new harddrive, and run the game without a re-install?

nice to see this post again its been awhile and since im away from the backup hangers and other computer my grand total now is 23.5 GB (25,333,002,240 bytes) on disc :( oh well when i get home ill clean it all up again ,,,yes i think it is possable or you could just copy all important files scenery cfgs, aircraft all the bits and pieces and then copy paste in fresh install on new puter ,,ive been doing it that way for years now and i reinstall often ..
mike :)

edit:well ive never tryed full movement of fs9 so charl post below must be the answer ....thanx charl

No because the Windows registry needs to know where to point.
I just did a FS rebuild - note I do not say install - and first simply copied everything onto another hard drive then reinstalled the sim.
Boy did it fly! Just a few aircraft, gauges and bare essentials scenery (=everything NZ)

Then I picked out bits of the 100Gig on the other drive that I wanted back.
Amazing how much crud you pick up over time as there is still maybe 80 Gig left untouched.

Same for me Charl. Did a fresh install 5 weeks ago (after copying everything to another drive), and just re-installed the bits i wanted). At the moment, the FS folder stands at 27.83gb, and thats with just NZ Sceneries ( no overseas yet), and aircraft etc that i want. Lot of junk i dont want in the old copies, which total about 72gb. And yes, it DOES :plane: FLY :plane: after the fresh install. Up untill the fresh install 5 weeks ago, i was still running on my original install from November 2003 !! Still, size wise, its nowhere near as big as my Microsoft Train Simulator folder,........that currently stands at 123.96gb !! :o
