MS2020 Reinstall

I'm not sure what went wrong but my loading times became increasingly ridiculous, so I elected to reinstall. I use Steam so I tried all the file verifications etc but no joy, so went the full monty.
I tried the trick of copying the package folder and putting it back in after the 1% install, so as to fool the install process into thinking it was already installed....but no joy. It's downloading the lot. Taking ages at 65Mbs. It seems that that trick may only work with the store version.
I will not be a happy chappy if this doesn't work.

I feel your pain CP, just went thru a full reinstall of 2020 after deciding to stick w that for the time being, had uninstalled it prior to my SSD drive swapping after running out of space so clean slate was the only real option. Seems stable so far. Good luck

I know you jest :D . We could always do with a new computer, but the one I have now is pretty good.

I9-13900KS
RTX 4080
32GB RAM
2 x Samsung SSD 990 PRP 2Tb NVMe drives

It's the internet connection that's crap. Rural broadband.

72% downloaded so far. Just another 3 hours or so to go.

I9-13900KS<-----that is correct speed
RTX 4080<--------hope it is 16 GB video ram
32GB RAM<-----flightsimmers have no problem flying with 32GB but knowing your desire to use fancy payware planes plus payware sceneries you might need 64GB[
2 x Samsung SSD 990 PRP 2Tb NVMe drives<----------that looks fine DEPENDING how much payware add on planes and sceneries you put into MS2020. I would use single 4 TB SSD drive

It's the internet connection that's crap. Rural broadband. <------I am told that flightsimmers would need AT LEAST 300 bps speed for internet speed to use MS2020 and MS2024

Actually MSFS 2020 has been running very well up until now. Some tweak or driver update must have borked it. Same in Safe mode.
After the reinstall, the sim would crash halfway through the initial loading process. Flickering screen and corrupted sound before a CTD. Turns out it was a 190_E658703.dll issue. This seems to be due to the latest Nvidia drivers and DLSS 4. Removing those dlls and rolling back the graphics driver fixed that problem, however, after selecting an airfield and aircraft the loading progress bar initially moves quickly then slows down at the end part and then just "freezes" when it reaches the end. The reinstall did have an issue and this may have been due to that dll error. I will have to install again, but this time i'll see if I can retain the packages folder.

I finally got it sorted. It took another steam install and this time I checked where the main sim was installed and the packages folder.
So far it seems to be working ok. I’m using add on linker to check and see what’s working from the community folder.
Fingers crossed that it continues to run smoothly.

Good news indeed.
I am suspicious of the recent Nvidia activity - seems everyone has FOMO on the AI front.
After I allowed it to use AI to interpolate frames, the sim started showing 2 blurry frames every third one.
It also decided to save my screenshots in some indecipherable format, most irritating.
I undid everything back to the previous week and things look OK.

Hope yours lives on, unencumbered.

Don't tell him that. It took him 5 years to work through the options when it came to buying the last one :D

Quite right. It’s part of the “fun”. The old Cost vs features vs future proofing stuff.
I’m not sure what I’d buy now if I was upgrading. The 4090s are still way too expensive and the 5xxx series seem like expensive lemons.
My current CPU is merely idling when I’m on FS2020. MSFS 2024 seems all about bandwidth. I’ll move there eventually when they sort it out….if they sort it out. MS has abandoned flight simulator before.

I have essentially the same rig as yours.
In anticipation of FS24 I doubled RAM to 64GB.
No harm done, and no viable upgrade anywhere in sight.

Today I discovered that between the sim and WIN!! I have lost several Marketplace payware items.
That'll keep me busy,

I must admit that I am glad I purchased MS2020 via Steam. Once I figured out how to direct the install to the correct place it only took a few minutes to install. It’s all about removing or renaming the Packages folder and adding back. MS2020 see the Package there so it doesn’t reload all the Scenery, aircraft and updates etc. My mistake was having it install to the wrong place and it appeared that the C drive was the only option. It isn’t. Also the steam files are not as encrypted as the Store version so they can be modified. As long as Steam stays in existence, I’m fine.
Addon linker was also a great help.

I may look at upgrading the RAM to 64 GB if I move to 2024. It’s wasn’t that long ago that 64 GB was a decent sized hard drive!

Confucius say "whatever you buy for a computer will be out-of-date in three months and obsolete in six".

No idea what you mean

Of interest is the cost of a flightsim computer hasn't changed in 25 years!
