2D vs. 3D cockpit

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

at times we only have the 2d option ... myself 3d prefer,d and with that can land on anything , C130s on Carriers , the big heli's on rooftops dictate the 3d for the professional landing :)

Like a lot of others, I 2D for detail and 3D for looking about and trying to get a better perspective. The major problem, or downside for me in FS9, is trying to keep track of where the airstrip is when flying in and doing a 180 degree turn.

Well how do they do this in real-life? Especially if your sat on the left but the airport is to your right? Not exactly easy to just lean over and 'av a look! GPS perhaps?

3D for me. I love the viewing in IL2 Sturmovik (now where did that BF109 go???), doesn't seem nearly as good in 2004, unless I'm just not using it right.

For me it's a matter of perspective. I have flown light aircraft and found that I had a much better sense of where I physically was in relation to the airfield than I do in the
simulation. Which reminds me, can anyone tell me how to speed up the "swivel" effect in 3D, I haven't re-adjusted this since a major rebuild a while ago ?

In
"C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\fs9.CFG"
or wherever you put your FS cfg file
Search for
PAN_RATE=400
Bigger numbers=faster pan rate

Not sure where the equivalent FSX might be.

Hey all, for VFR I use ONLY VC, it's amazing especially in Marlborough. I fly IFR-s at night so I use only 2D to make i all clear.

I use 2D for start up then change to 3D for taxi.
I take off on the 3D and stay in that until after landing B-)

Cheers

3D all the way for me. Only time I use VC is when I need to see an instrument better.

I use both, in helicoter 2D i activate GPS, then flying in VC - that is more realistic. To view GPS i zapp between 2D and VC. My next dream to complete realistic is TrackIR :wink2:

At some models it´s clearlier to fly in 2D to view the instruments

I prefer to fly 3D, but I use 2D in certain situations as others have said.

For screenshots, on the rare occasion I take them, I would definitely use 3D, but access to instruments and switches etc is sometimes easier in VC.

Cheers
