As I recall .... the RNZAF "pranged" a couple of their BRISTOL's. Here's a report concerning the CFIT "prang" near Blenhiem of NZ5908 during 1953 .... .... and a report coverning the NZ5901 which we pranged whilst supply dropping in Malaysia during 1954 .... SAFE AIR "broke" one too .... ZK-AYH .... near Christchurch during 1957 (this particular accident uncovered a maintenance/spar concern for all BRISTOL FREIGHTER's worlwide at the time) as per the following-liked report and other reflection .... SAFE also operated another BRISTOL .... ZK-AYG (the unlucky ship)...

Sort of an area of interest for me. NZ had no air assets in Vietnam per se. The Freighters would operate a shuttle service out of Singapore but they never directly supplied combat operations. Back to Malaya and Indonesia... that's a different story. Bristols, Venoms, Canberras all hand in hand with the British and Australians. It was that involvment in counter insurgency that lead us to join 1ATF in Vietnam

Radar88, Thanks for great explanations and great accompanying hyperlinks. I agree with your theories for scenario possibility about why there were three Air New Zealand DC-10s at same time at NZCH. Surprised me via one of your hyperlinks revealing that DC-10 had emergency air driven propeller generator which reminded me of Air Transat A330 making successful emergency landing after losing power in both engines and flying for about 20 minutes without engines while using emergency air driven propeller generator! Regards, Aharon

Hey Marty It's a stretch now on the old memory of the Tiki tour convoy group of aircraft down from Associated Aviation Kapiti NZPP. I can just recall the Airshow flight line on the Western side of NZCH where the Aero Club is based now-days and also recall seeing the Aussie F-111 doing his pass. The Aussies always came over for the Summer Airshows during the 80's remember doing another Tiki tour up to Ardmore NZAR for an Airshow a few years before in March 1985 when it did the low level run along the runway, pulling away wings swept back with the variable-sweep wings and the afterburner...

shows a VC-10 that could be at Auckland I’m not 100% sure Thanks lindstrim for the link. The description accompanying the photo of VC-10 did say it was at NZAA so you are correct. Regards, Aharon

You'll know combat aircraft when you see them as they often fly in pairs, so a pair of contrails is two combat aircraft in a standard combat spread patrolling over New Zealand armed with mostly smart weapons for ground targets. Often it is F-15's and Superhornets, another way to spot them is their beacons can be set for different patterns on the Superhornet and this sequence makes them stand out among other aircraft types....lol I invited them here. :D

Thanks... So make friends with the Tower Guy, if he's there have a chat, otherwise do anything you like, in daylight? This is easier than flying a drone, which has really strict limitations on what you can and cannot do!

Yes that would be correct. Although the canopy was let go nobody ejected but they were obviously ready to. All I could see were a lot of boots dropping to the ground. I don't think they would need to fertalise the grass for a while that's for sure. I must confess that I spent a lot of my miss spent youth along that perimeter fence The vampires and Canberra's were often parked nose to the fence and after the engines were fired up they would turn and we would warm up quite nicely. The smell of the kerosene was quite distinctive. As I sit at home the odd tear runs down the cheek as I remember...
