Howdy Zöltuger, Many thanks. Issue resolved by simply dumping the Win98 drivers and using the correct USB port to plug the stick into. Also important was remembering to load the appropriate (if somewhat out-of-date) profile (FS2000). Loads up fine every time now. (BTW: this was for She Who Must Be Obeyed's benefit; she wanted to play Crimson Skies and couldn't because of the aforementioned problem. Ah, the hassels of a 3 computer household. )

nope, its not the refresh rate. Perhaps it could be drivers, but I wouldnt have a clue where to get drivers for an old Philips/Dell 17" CRT. :(

mmmmm. See the thing is the Overclocked version and the regular version of the card are both exactly the same price. Also, the Palit 7600GS card is the same price. Which one to get? Also, I dont want to get a 7900GT. See the thing is you can wait as long as you want (like Zoltuger said). And seeing as my budgets very tight, Id rather just get something that will go well enough for my needs, and thats all. ;)

Things get even more complicated in FSX. Here's a quote from Adam Szofran of Microsoft: The lights come on when the ambient light level falls below 25% of maximum. This is done on a pixel-by-pixel basis and is not blindly tied to the day/dawn/dusk/night state like it was in FS9. We did this so that the lights turn on in heavily shadowed valleys before they turn on in areas still illuminated by the sun. Jeez, microsft really did do their homework this time didnt they?

Fixed EXEs/cracks can be used for evil. While I'm sure nobody on this forum has pirated FS9, it's against forum rules to discuss breaching copyright. As for FSX, it uses online activiation similar to Windows XP and Office- which is a brilliant idea, it saves having to reload the disk all the time.

AMD stuff always seems to outperform Intel stuff Not at present... the Intel Core 2 Duo's stomp all over the AMD X2's... and they are around the same price... Intel do have a bad habit of changing the socket for each new CPU tho, whereas AMD like to re-use socket design, so you can usually get at least 2 generations out of a mobo... Yes, HardCorePawn, you are correct. I just finished reading an article about it in the latest NZ PC World. Still, i have no doubt that will change again when AMD brings out a new design, as always seems to happen. Isnt technology great, changes so quickly...

My understanding of OEM as far as licensing goes, is that it is sold with the component and designed to be used only with that component. That is, if it was an O/S, it cannot be reinstalled on another PC, hence why they usually put the Windows Serial and licence sticker on the cases of PC's. We come across it a bit in the insurance industry, if a PC is stolen or damaged, we are obliged to buy a new O/S even if the client still has the original discs that could (in thoery) be re-loaded. The benefit though is OEM versions bundled with products don't normally have all the flash packaging...

as we all know from Trolly's experience, AGP 8x cards don't necessarily work in 4x slots. it sounds from this article that it depends on the card and motherboard combination. i'll try and dig some more info when i get time later this week

just be aware that your power supply will need a spare connector, and should be powerful enough to power the new card. :o Is this something I need to worry about when I get a new computer? (even if its a fairly old AGP Card?) depends on the card and computer if you're getting something really powerful, like a geforce 7900GTX, and you have lots of hard disks or DVD drives, then you'll need a 500W+ power supply if its less powerful (say a 6600GT) and one or two hard disks, then you'll survive with a 400W generic power supply.
