I made an assumption of fibre as it only gets worse from there as you go 'down' the available technologies.
My experience is on 100Mbps fibre via Orcon, which at peak times can get pretty high latency.
I notice it mostly Friday nights and Saturday nights as worst; I guess everyone is watching Netflix! :)

That's great to hear Jeff, I've also been in the IT field some 26 years here in NZ.

You may be interested in an email I've just received today from Orcon with a media release update advising Orcon - First to trial Residential 10 Gbps Broadband

Yep, just seen that in my mailbox this morning. Not much they can do about the latency to other parts of the world though!

I had decided to hold off on signing up for the Insider program, as I probably have enough to do between now and when the new sim is released...
But Microsoft's announcement today means that this may well be in Godzone's future, so I'm onboard now!
If you haven't seen today's announcement.

That certainly sounds promising. I do hope they've built the engine from the ground up (ha - small play on aviation theme there!) and left all the legacy issues behind. I further hope that the flight modelling is improved, especially in helis as I'd really like to get into that next. (though it will need to wait until I get my paragliding all squared away)

Looking at the trailer it would seem that the main engine/graphics side of things is sorted. So hopefully not too huge a timeline to release. Dare I say many months and not years away?

Another announcement today, aimed squarely at the online community, mainly 'AVISIM' -- AVSIM will just have to change their name, that's all there is to it...

Over at the forum formerly known as AVSIM, there has been some discussion about Microsoft's attitude to the community. I've never had any doubt that this is an important thing for Microsoft, how to have some sort of relationship with their software users without being buried under piles of rubbish. A long time ago -- before I owned a flight simulator -- I was a Microsoft MVP, a kind of unpaid community support person on the Microsoft use-groups. This was actually part of the Office program, I was seriously into Microsoft Publisher back then.

In the early new century Microsoft invited the local MVPs to Sydney. We dealt with a lot of subjects over there, but the main focus was how Microsoft could expand their involvement in the online communities. They listened a lot, and we've certainly seen the result since -- sure, they can't deal with every troll going on about the evil 'M$' corporation, but they do better than most when it comes to direct support.

One aspect of the MVP program was the 'gifts' -- all the software, and most of the hardware, you could wish for. At one point I received their flight simulator, FS2000 I think, and the rest is history. No more Microsoft Publisher for me, now it's all about the scenery.

So far they haven't put a foot wrong about the new sim, and believe me, plenty of people are waiting for them to stumble. Looks like a soonish beta, and community involvement in the SDK development -- just like FSX. (I was a beta tester for the SDK back then. Some of my suggestions were used, but I still feel guilty that I never got around to reporting the 'Whenpuapai' situation... every time I hear than, I cringe.

Ok, so things do seem to be moving along quickly, with a "DRR preview release in t-minus 7 days… " The mood over at A**** can only be described as 'fraught', after that cute bit of mis-direction this morning, with the 'big news' about FSX.
In preparation for the new sim, I'm planning to upload my consciousness to the Cloud. In a few days I get fibre installed, and if that works as expected then I'm shifting to Azure and quitting this old body. So long, suckers.

Yes, I wasn't going to sign up, as I didn't think I needed another time-waster, but in the end I couldn't pass it by. I'm a sucker for a new sim.

That did cross my mind, it wouldn't take much to turn Prepar3d into a niche commercial product just by tightening up on the licensing. LM would probably find it easier just to lose the academic license if Microsoft wanted to take back the market. And probably not a great loss to LM in the long run.
P.S. So US$200 for a normal Prepar3d license means NZ$350 including GST...

If there's one thing I've learned about flightsim -- you can never over-estimate the amount of discussion around any new sim! I used to dread any new FS version, because it would open up the floodgates to crazy-town. Now I've decided that if you can't beat 'em….
Luckily this time around it won't be 'discussed' to destruction like just about everything else recently.

Yes, it's great to see NZ in the new sim, that's a very well-flown area on my sim, originally in the Grand Traverse 'mission' released with the Southern Lakes scenery for FSX.

Rob what are your thoughts so far on the new sim? Is it a similar structure to the old one or entirely different?
