Well .... here's me thinking that last month's theme was easy - and *this* month was going to be hard!!!

Some amazing shots turning up - and very imaginative too. Well done!! Keep them coming!

Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik , Okt. 1942 near Stalingrad...
Note: this is one of the first Series, not the later Two-Seater Il2M3.
Between 31.000 and 36000 build, around 24.200 lost. 1941-1945. It was a deadly aircraft and in german it was "Der schwarze Tod", "The "Black Death". As the new Il-10 was coming out, she never replaced complete the old Shturmovik...
The inscription "Смерть фашистских оккупантов" in English "Death to the fascist occupants"...
After the WWII the Il-2 was the aircraft, that was first replaced in the soviet Air Force, but the concept is still alive with the Sukhoi Su 25 and the Fairchild A-10.

Picture from "Il-2 Shturmovik, Stalingrad."

Edited by Adam: It's Photobucket messing with your systems! I've uploaded it to NZFF - but you may want to try Postimage at some stage. Way easier!

First time I've been in a position to enter in a while...

November 18 1966, William 'Pete' Knight takes the second X-15 (c/n 56-6671) on flight 175, a speed run, hitting a peak altitude of 100,200ft and Mach 6.33. The X-15 flew 199 flights between June 1959 and October 1968 setting speed and altitude records on a number of occasions. To this day, it is still the fastest manned aircraft to have flown (if you don't count the Shuttle) and carried eight of its pilots on flights where they gained astronaut wings. Without the X-15 pioneering, subsequent supersonic and hypersonic aircraft (including the shuttle) would've been well behind in development. During this high risk test flying, only one X-15 was lost with a fatality.

Here the unsung hero is a simulator rather than an aircraft -- Flightsim World never really got to shine the way it could have.

I've revised my entry - though I've left the old Hurricane pic up there to serve as an example.

The Bismarck must have been the single greatest threat to convoys in the N. Atlantic in WWII. After tragically sinking HMS Hood on the 24th May 1941, the hunt was on ...

Bismarck was spotted by an RAF Coastal Command 209 Sqn Catalina crew on the morning of 26th May. Later that day, an attack by Swordfish from HMS Ark Royal damaged the rudder of the Bismark, sealing her fate. So many servicemen on both sides died in that encounter, but this is a tribute to the naked courage of those "Stringbag" crews.

Both components of the pic are freeware and (incredibly) both work in P3Dv4:
1) Bismarck!_Fs9_and_FSX.zip by Shessi (S.O.H.)
2) Flying Stations Swordfish.

Shessi's screnery even has ack-ack effects that spring into action when you approach the ship.
