Quite possibly a pouch for shaking dice. Think (ha ha) if memory serves...that I have seen one used for crown and anchor also similar in pool table hall, for who goes 1st, etc.

Ha! - a dice cup makes a lot of sense. Hard to get the scale of it, but it seems too small to be a tobacco jar for a cricket fan. Then again, maybe it's an early version of those things retired cricketers use to keep their cufflinks in

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

judging size against the window frame, it looks similar to a thing my grandmother used to use for darning socks.
You pull the sock over it and stuff the overhang inside out of the way while darning the hole as required.

might be completely wrong but that is what sprang to mind straight away when I saw it. :)

Thanks for the ideas gents ...all worth following up.
Sorry, I should have mentioned the size ... it's just a bit bigger than a cricket ball.

My first thought was a gear knob for a fancy vintage car, but now you have given it some size perspective I don't have a clue :givein:
