Axalp 2017 - 11.10.2017

Postby gsnde » Sun Oct 15, 2017 7:21 am

You may remember my series from 2014 in Payerne, when the Swiss Air Force was celebrating their 100 year anniversary over two weekends with an unbelievably good event.

Payerne 2014 - 30.08.2014
Payerne 2014 - 31.08.2014
Payerne 2014 - 06.09.2014

Back then I said that some day I would go and see the public shooting training on the Axalp. The Axalp is 2250 m above sea high up in the Swiss mountains. This year I finally managed to get there, and here are some of the pictures I have taken.

Eurocopter EC635 - while some special guests been flown up, the rest of the ~7.500 people have to climb for hours, and I don't talk tracking trails!

Great series, thanks for the post!

Every once in awhile you get the opportunity to give yourself a Big Uppercut...
A week prior to this event I was in Lucerne - you can just about throw a stone from there to Axalp - and I didn't think to enquire when the Swiss Air Force was going to play!
And it's not as if you aren't aware of the Swiss military, all the time.
Their mountains are like Swiss cheese, drilled through with countless tunnels and caverns and things disguised to look innocent.
Take a look at this approach to the upper aerial cable-way station on Mt. Pilatus:

You've got me Charl ... I see a couple of bridges/viaducts that appear to go to nowhere ... but other than that

Thank you for the nice words! :)

Charl - you were still in Switzerland when the Axalp took place? That is indeed very bad luck!

By the way - you were here at the other side of the world and did not notify me????? Luzern is less than two hours from my house.
That would have been such a nice opportunity.

Martin, as I said: What was I thinking??
In my defence, I was on a very tight schedule... next time, eh?

Marty, the arrows point to two very large doors in the rockface.
Their purpose is not immediately clear - but then I have seen photos of Mirages hanging on the wall of a subterranean Swiss cavern so anything is possible!

I would like that very much, Charl!

As for the Pilatus - this might give you an idea:

Interesting... I have always been bemused by the Swiss attitude to National Defence:
On the one hand, staunchly neutral, on the other, one of the most militarised civilian populations on the planet!
And, by citizens' referendum, deciding whether to buy a new type of jet for the Air Force

There's that Swiss thing again... everyone seems to know about this stuff, yet it all looks so very secretive!
On the other side of Pilatus at Alpnach is a military airfield with those taxiways that go straight up to the "rockface".
