VOR/DME Night
Sunday 09th August 2015 1800-2300 NZST / 1600-2100 AEST / 0600-1100 UTC
This week we fly between New Plymouth, Gisborne & Woodbourne using VOR/DME navigation and approaches.
There are two kinds of VOR/DME approaches.
- Fly over the airport VOR at a specific height, turn to specific heading for a specific dististance, then turn onto the runway heading & descend via the distance steps.
- Arc approach - Fly towards the airport VOR at a specific height, then at a specific distance from the airport (eg 12 DME), turn & follow the arc until you are nearly inline with the runway, then turn onto the runway heading and descend via the distance steps. While in the arc phase the aim is to remain the specific distance (eg 12 DME) from there airport. Of the two approaches this is probably the more tricky.
Of course there is the third kind of navigation & approach!
- Bluff the controller approach. Just load the VOR's into your GPS for navigation, then use you GPS to trick the contoller into thinking you really know your stuff by imitating one of the two approaches explained above.
